Server Maintenance today from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Pacific to be followed by Update 2.4.0
Bungie has not confirmed the size of the Update, but many suspect it will be in the neighborhood of 14 GB. This means we are basically downloading Rise of Iron prior to launch - just like Bungie did with TTK - and on launch day Bungie will release a small update to activate the content.
Bungie did post on their website that the Update will be available for pre-download during the maintenance period, but will not be playable until after the maintenance is finished.

But they didn't say how the update could be pre-downloaded anywhere that I could see; does this mean it will happen automagically?
EDIT: It'll download when you sign in. Pre-download now available, ~13GB.
Wow! New splash screen and title music came up for me. Didn't expect to be seeing that stuff for another couple of weeks. Of course, the servers are still down, so that's as far as it goes right now.
Lots of changes to weapons in that update. Some I'm happy to see. Something I believe Achy had happen recently though may be fixed. Their "final note":
This bug has been an incredibly difficult one to fix and test – we hope that we got it this time.
Firefly
Possible fix for crash related to special effects triggered by the Firefly perk
Just read through the patch notes, looks like lots of changes are going into place, including some crucible changes to salvage and rift. Also noticed I'm no longer 100% in the game, the new achievements are listed.
Make that 11 PM eastern. Checked out the Touch of Malice and indeed Blessing goes away when one empties the magazine. Pop back into the bubble and back out and the damage level stays the same if auto firing continues. However, one can fire down to the last round, switch weapons, then back to the Malice and get full health back -- or get more disciplined about firing the weapon.
My understanding of the rational for taking away blessings from the Malice was to stop players from taking advantage of it in the Crucible. I don't play Crucible much but have not seen players popping in and out of bubbles to take advantage of this. Anyone else? Is this an issue in Trials?

Crucible? I've never seen it used effectively in Crucible, however I could see this being an issue with a team full of Defender Titans running a bubble chain.
I'm wondering if it's more about protecting the new raid? Perhaps there are parts of the new raid this would have broken things?

Regardless, I don't think it's a big deal.
Now, I'm not a "tip of the spear" player but in my experience, this is extremely rare in Crucible. Got killed by a ToM in a game over the last week, but can't recall the last time I've seen it used. Have never seen ToM used in Trials.

That was my deduction from reading the weapon tuning stuff:
-- Touch of Malice
It is intended that Touch of Malice still shine best in King’s Fall, but outside of the Raid, clever players figured out how to avoid Touch of Malice’s single drawback by imbuing themselves with the Blessing of Light - but the Darkness has been boiling stronger within the gun...
Touch of Malice’s self-damage infliction now removes Blessing of Light. --
I figured that meant Crucible although I never saw that tactic used. That's why I asked if anyone else had seen it used.
As Blam mentioned in another thread and I confirmed last night, one can still overcome this nerf a bit by a quick switch of weapons and switch back when popping in and out of a blessings bubble. I do find it interesting that weapons tuning to allegedly balance PVP tends to make PVE tougher. Remember the reduction in ammo carried with the spring update?
When that first came out everyone was "concerned" (not my first choice of words) that the reduction would make the KF raid much tougher if not impossible to complete but we all adapted. I am sure we will adapt here. Some of us will find out tonight if we get to Oryx.
Interesting that the nerf will only impact taking out the Ogres so don't discard those Malices just yet.
Apparently hoarded Exotic Engrams will occasionally decode Y3 weapons.
I believe the only confirmed Y3 exotic dropping is the new sidearm, The Trespasser. Bungie tweeted this is not a bug, so it's all good. Also, people are reporting some 335+ Light exotic primary and boot engrams - but not the new gear.
As a fan of sidearms, I'm excited to try out The Trespasser, so this is awesome.
I was just reading through the unannounced changes thread on reddit. Some nice stuff, some oh my... Sleeper nerf'd so it doesn't solo stun Oryx anymore. Trials gold bounty apparently is no longer complete matches, but is win rounds, that will make getting loot a lot tougher.
Darth, I also thought of you this morning. I saw some images of the Tanik's cloak with different shaders. Looks pretty nice.
Deep, they need to keep their hands off of our gun! Mine already has a smaller magazine due to one of the perks.
Trials gold bounty change is going to make getting loot a LOT tougher. I expect that many people who have been casually dipping in and out of Trials won't bother any longer - I heard it will be 20 round wins, which is a lot if you can barely eke out a single round win on a passage.
Yeah, I'm a little salty about this - they made Trials a bit more accessible with the last bounty change, and assuming this news is correct, now they are effectively putting the gear out of reach for almost everybody again.
You noobs and your Arminius...nobody uses Auto Rifles anymore...
I did see some of the pics of class items and the shaders - YAY, I can now display a wide selection of carpet samples.
I'm a little bummed about the change to the Gold Tier trials bounty, but perhaps there will be other bounties that are more "noob friendly". Otherwise, I guess we'll have to "get gud".
Apparently Bungie paid a blacksmith to reproduce in metal the axe that Lord Saladin will wield in Rise of Iron: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb5ySt92YPE
I seem to have 93 Exotic Engrams in the Vault waiting for RoI release. Hmmm, what to do with them?
Almost twice as many as me! (48)
Heads up if you haven't read the Bungie weekly update. Downtime this Thursday Sept 8 from 11am - 7pm Eastern followed by Update 2.4.0.
Apparently there will be some in-game events leading up to RoI. Maybe even starting after the patch today? "Keep your eyes open!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEgHalZoCtg&feature=youtu.be&t=51m40s

Maybe after the start screen? 8 to 4 Pacific? Means 11 to 7 Eastern. Looks like I will be watching a lot of Star Trek today.
Yep, after you hit the title screen, it tries to update. Downloading the thing now.

These should go live after today's 2.4.0 patch.

9 new achievements, one of them is secret...
Bungie will not stop fucking around with my Arminius.
Maintenance has been extended 2 hours, estimated completion is now approx 9pm Eastern.
I never liked Touch of Malice for the Ogres anyway. Read the weapon update for context.

Re-tested my Arminius. It's still the same face melter. Needs to be reloaded a little more often, just as Bungie intended.
