Whisper of the Worm
Whisper of the Worm
I figured we might want our own topic for this challenge. This way we can talk loadouts and strategy.
There are total of 5 areas where you fight the Taken. Generally you'll be dealing with solar shields in the first two rooms. Mainly Captains in the first two areas with snipers and acolytes. Void and Solar in the 3rd room, but mostly Void with lots of Witches and Acolytes. The 4th area I don't recall as it seems it's mostly Taken snipers and goblins.
The 5th room is the "boss" room where you basically have 3 taken Majors you have to kill. Lots of health, no shields. I think the shielded enemies are mainly Arc in this area. One strategy is to sit back where you first enter the area after clearing the area enough for the bosses to spawn. Plink away with Polaris Lance and snipers or linear fusion.
The whole encounter is basically 380+, so it's tough sledding dealing with all the Taken and their various bags of tricks. Even at 385, I wasn't able to take more than two or three hits before I was dead. So you want to get your Power level as high as possible.
Here is the loadout I used that got me the furthest solo:
Hunter, Arcstrider with Raiden Flux chest. Midnight Coup (raid handcannon), Hardlight (great for being able to match shields) and Tarantula (solar). Arcstrider with Raiden Flux can really clear an area allowing you room to move around and find angles.
I also found Hammer titan is really good with clearing areas and Stormcaller with Crown of Tempests works well too.
I also had good results using Polaris Lance and either the EP shotty or sniper.
You have 20 minutes to complete the encounter or you are returned to orbit. If I am lucky with my jumps and don't screw up, I made it to the damage area with about 12 minutes on the clock. I would HIGHLY suggest watching some videos and then trying it alone to see how the jumping works.
If you can get everybody into the fighting areas with around 10 minutes, I think you should be good to go. Now that I've become a little more competent with the jumping puzzle, I think this challenge is not too bad, so I hope to get back into the challenge with a full Fireteam.
~370. I'll just play in the jump puzzle until September, unless a quick way to 385 comes along. The Solstice thing is likely not going to do it for me.
Keep plugging away at the weekly powerful gear challenges -- Flashpoint, Clan XP, Crucible (which I loathe), and Heroic strikes. I have worked my way up to 383 on 2 characters with very little raiding. I could get my third up to that level in a couple of weeks if I wanted to exert the effort. Other than the raids, everything was done solo/matchmaking.
I went to Io this afternoon hoping to continue exploring the platforming phase, but had no luck whatsoever. Cabal extraction after cabal extraction was all I got. Half a dozen in all.
Harriz, Superfly and I waited for 2 hours last night and the blight event never spawned. Others were reporting longer waits yesterday, so it seems something is broken.
Plus, Bungie tweeted the anomaly is disappearing at reset today, but will return. Perhaps this will be a Friday - Monday type event.
DEEP, you might be ok at 370, especially if you go in with a 380+ team.
I am all up for helping any and all to get this done - assuming I can actually get it done...lol
Let's show these Taken how us old folks roll!
Yep, event ends for the week at 1000 Pacific. Appears that most of the events are now Taken to make up for lost time. Got two in a row this morning. Could not see the major that opens the portal though. Maybe there isn't one for each and every event.
The Major that opens the portal can spawn in two different places. The most common seems to be on the cliffside, but if not there he'll be on the ground in that same area around the pools and rock formation. Of course if you don't see him in either place, you can just reload the instance and often times you'll see the portal open from a previous group.
Good advice, thanks. A video I saw also suggested a third spawn location, near one of the event spawn points, behind the tree in the middle of what looks like a crude spiral staircase allowing jump access to the top of the plateau there.
I was fortunate enough to get the Whisper yesterday, so I may be able to help get others through it.
However, it sounds like it won't be active again until next weekend.
Titan with Catapult Lift and Lion Rampants was what I used to get through the jump puzzle. Catapult Lift can lift you back up in case you miss your initial jump. It did take me a while to get used to it since I don't normally use that.
I heard that St0mp-335 are helpful for Hunters, but I haven't done that. I imagine that you would switch to Raiden Flux after getting through the jumping part.
Yes, I used the St0mp boots on my Hunter and it was much easier for me. Unfortunately I do not have the Lion Ramparts for my Titan.
I got my Whisper this weekend after another extended run of Cabal drills on Saturday. The gun really does live up to the hype, but for those of us with potato aim (notice I am including myself...lol), you gotta hit those crits to make it count.
I have become decent at the jumping section. I'm never going to be fast, but I can reliably make it through now on all my toons.
How did the rest of you do this weekend if you tried the mission?
I'm still figuring out the jump puzzles on my own. I think I'm in the final section. I've cheated a bit when I get stuck.
This could have been a perfect puzzle quest if not for the timer.
I hear you on the viability of the Whisper of the Worm. My usage of previous versions was limited. I often chose something more consistent.
Ran a strike with 2 randoms, each of whom had the Worm. The strike was the Mercury Cable one, and the boss was wiped in the first encounter. I was impressed. I haven't even gotten into the start of the Worm. Real life keeps getting in the way. My Condo is on the market and I am always "on call" to leave from 10AM to 9PM with anywhere from all day to minutes notice. Definitely makes it tough to invest some time in gaming. I would like to run it though.
DEEP and Achy, I would be happy to run with you guys if you are interested. Certainly one of the more unique experiences in the game.
Thanks. When life calms down a little -- read contract on my condo -- I will be ready to go.
Congrats, Darth! Who did you make the successful run with? I've made it to the first room a couple times. I am slow, but the main thing that worries me is how fast I melted when I got down there. I was on my own both times, so it's difficult to extrapolate to a fireteam, but the volume of fire was very high, and I couldn't find anywhere to hide in the few minutes I had.
I ran it with two of my buddies from the Halo days. I also ran it again later with SHEEBS (he already had his too) and Superfly to get his gun.
You are right though, it's tough sledding going in solo - lots of fire!
Anyone else up for an attempt (or two or three) to get Whisper this coming weekend? WulleyMammoth is also interested and available after 6:30pm Sat and Sun.
I can help any that still need it.
Count me in. I still need it.
Ok, let's plan for Saturday, 6:30pm Eastern. I'll start a party, and we'll try to build three-man fireteams. I don't have any big expectations, but I'd like to get down to caves with a fireteam at least one time to say I tried!
Saturday night is no longer good unfortunately. I will have to try on Friday at 6:30pm instead.
I may not be on that early Krak, but I should be around later if people need help.
I might be able to help with a Whisper run as well.
Think I can do 6:30 tonight.
Thanks to Achy and BCyclops I finally got into the Whisper fight with a full fireteam. Also did some runs with Wulleymammoth and Vaht Vokuree later (Vaht was new, but by the third run he navigated the jumping very well). The best my groups have done is to nearly clear the third room (the one with the triangular door). Very glad to get as far as I did, and I'd be happy to make more attempts if opportunities present. At this point, I feel like I have a good idea about loadout and jumping, though I continue to get faster. Still lots to learn regarding the good places to hide and ordering the targets.
