Crafting in Witcher 3

Looking for a Witcher expert to fill me in on crafting. I don't get the point. Seems like all the stats on the things I can craft aren't better than the gear I have. The only ones a little exciting are many levels above where I am. Am I missing something? I'm level 6 right now. Thanks!
