343 punishing players for wanting to play Halo 4
343 punishing players for wanting to play Halo 4
Some of you have heard me complain about the XP cap I hit pretty much every day. Today in my last match I earned XP in I got enough listed XP to rank up, but instead it just didn't give me that much and prevented me from gaining any more today. This was at 4pm, and now I can't play and gain XP until I wake up tomorrow. If I do play, 343 punishes me by allowing me to gain commendation and challenge progress, and even popping up messages saying how much "XP" I earned in a match. But they don't actually give that XP, it is lost forever.
So unless I want to very carefully play which weapons, gametypes, and medals I earn every time I play, and pray I don't accidentally rank something up, I can't play without missing out.
The XP cap isn't even functioning correctly either. It gives a message when you hit it, and then you earn no more. That's normal. Then a few hours later, I start earning XP again. Then I stop earning XP the same night again, but with no message. Sometimes I got a message saying I went from over 50 double XP matches left, to 0 instantly.
I want to play Halo 4. The gameplay I find very fun. It's the whole 343 part that is discouraging.
Edit: Quick note - I never once hit the cap in Reach.
Now that Halo 4 is released, I'm still waiting to play it.
because 343
It's not a ban in my case. It's a cap on how much can be earned per day. I've gotten it with double xp, and i've gotten it without double xp on different days. In both cases, every bit of XP that pops up from a challenge or commendation is just 343 taunting as they show you how much you would have earned if they let you, while instead they don't give any of that XP.
And what's the deal with kill cams? At least early on in Halo 4 there was a final kill cam. Now there doesn't seem to be? And why the F are they even there? It's like 343 decided to put them in knowing they'd detract from gameplay, but wanted to anyways, and just hoped we wouldn't notice that they were mostly nonfunctional buggy messes.
I can't even do achievement hunting because I have only three left to get, which I have to, yet again, wait for 343, because they haven't released the spartan ops episodes these achievements require.
It sucks debating whether to play with friends and get penalized, or to do something else for the entire afternoon and evening and hope that maybe tomorrow 343 will get their crap together and do something.
The people playing Halo 4 the most, the ones who just want ot keep playing the game 343 created, are the ones that 343 is screwing over the most. Time after time I look at design decisions they made and just have to wonder "What were they thinking?"
Also, screw join in progress. Those dudes who quit that I get to replace? Yeah they quit because the other team was crushing them to hell and the game was almost over in a blowout. So really, join in progress is a mechanic to fill spots on the losing team more than anything else. I would love a checkbox that makes it so I never find a matchmade game in progress to join. But the almight 343 decided that it was so much better to join in progress to keep matches going. Matches I would never ever want to join. Oh hey I managed to walk a whole three steps that time I joined in progress before my team lost, that's an improvement I guess. So glad my dewxp doubled the 19 XP I got for that match and counted down one match left.
Halo 4 has great reviews, nice sales, and is the most frustrating Halo experience I've had.
It doesn't keep you from playing - just earning XP. There are reasons for XP caps. You got the game a few days early and have capped stuff out early. It's not a bad trade off. ;).
I agree with you on kill cams. They are kinda wonky. They should have done a beta. I honestly don't mind join in progress at all. I never leave games, so this is much more preferable than having to play an entire match with a 2 man team because some timmie quits in the first 30 seconds.
This. If you like the game that much, would you still play it even if there was no XP to be earned? Think of Modern Warfare - once you reach the highest level, you can opt NOT to prestige and rank up again. In this case, all of the XP you earn, is not being applied to your rank, and you would just be playing the game because you enjoy it regardless of XP.
343 probably could have used another 6 months with the game to make sure everything was fine tuned and included in the base package (JiP toggle, campaign theater, consistent campaign checkpoints, etc).
I hope to see a JiP toggle in a TU sooner than later.
With all the complaints out there, I'd still rather be playing H4 than anything else, by far. I dont ever have to worry about the point cap so this isnt that big of a deal for me.
Agree. I also think as I have stated before that 343 rushed the game to market. They could have used some more time to get a fully functional game (in their own words -- this didn't make the cut, that didn't make the cut) and a beta would have pointed out some of the problems with current functionality -- JIP for example. The forums are pounding 343 pretty hard and I expect they are sitting up, taking notice, and planning enhancements and bug fixes as we speak.
Having said that it still is a really fun game to play. I am personally angry that real life has intruded on my game time and I can't play as much as I would want. Even so I expect these things to clear and give me more time to play this game, but I am too old and too crappy a player to even worry about hitting the XP cap and I don't like Mountain Dew or Doritos so the cap is not a real issue for me.
I would council patience.
Autarch, have you ever read why there are caps? In any case you are one of the exceptions that gets held back on the XP front. 343i will increase caps as required. Maybe your stats will help that happen. Once all that DBL XP crap is out of the way, people will begin to play more normally.
I wouldn't be nearly as put off by a cap if it capped you for the rest of the day, not on and off throughout, and if the commendations and challenges wouldn't be capped, or would carry over to the next day, or wouldn't progress while you are capped. Every time one pops up while I'm under the cap is a "gee thanks 343" moment.
I wish there was some way for me to punish Halo 4 players...I'll do what I can from here but don't expect much.
They need to finish counting the money before they release any title updates
uh-oh. We might never get one then. That's a lot of fracking money.
Lots of First-World problems here. I suppose this is what you get when you have the carrot-and-stick method of advancement and leveling in Halo, though.
Agreed... If you like Halo, you'll still play it because it's Halo, not just for the XP...
this.....Or you could always try an RPG, those games are laden with XP, Level Up's, medalions, special garments, etc.
whaaaaaat?! how many games does it possibly take to get the cap?

It is not the amount of games, it is the XP earned. At least that is my understanding. With the double xp thing you hit the cap twice as fast. But for most players that is still a good amount of games per day. It is not like 5 games played and you hit the XP cap.
But like others have said, what happens when you unlock everything? Are you done with the game? I mean if you do enjoy it like you say you do, maybe space out using the double xp and you could increase the amount of games you get to play each day without wasting your double XP games. Yeah you might "miss" the commendation bonus for a weapon/gametype/etc. But the earth will still keep spining.
LB doing math? tune in to tonights TnT to see if LBs brain survived this traumatic experience or if it was just one of his kids standing behind him "no, 2+2= 4 daddy, not double bacon cheeseburger"
I've heard it's 150,000 credits per 24 hours. Double XP games, I'm averaging like 5600 per game. That would be 26 games per day, not including other bonuses. About 4 hours, getting 6 games per hour (which is alot).
6 games per hour would be an achievement in itself!!! I can usually average 4 max, bewtween lobby issues, searching for players, and checking my FL to see if anyone else wants in.
really? I average 1500 XP a game. So, doubled would be 3000. So, 50 games a day. Say 40 with challenges. Average match + reset is 10 min. So, almost 7 hours a day.
I think it's reasonable to cap people at that.
I'm right there with Ghost. With double xp I was getting about 55, 5600 per game. And I work from home, so even 5 hours of gaming a day isn't that difficult to achieve.
And really, I don't care about the per game xp as much. But some of those commendations are big boosts.
Exactly. If I'm not earning XP for a match, I don't mind. I can play more the next day no problem. But I can't earn commendation XP that I've already completed and lost out on the XP for.
If the commendations and challenges wouldn't be wasted because of the cap, then yes I would continue playing after being capped.
God knows my kids suffer from this time to time....
I got 99 problems, but reaching a credit cap in H4 ain't one. :)
I have now invented a device to help me properly punish Halo players...I call it "The Stick of Stapley Regret" (working title). I duct taped an open stapler to a golf shaft. You really have to give it a good whack to dispense the staples but I'm willing to put in the extra effort because it's for a cause that I truly believe in.
