HELP: Port forwarding on a multi router LAN?

I want to move my broadband modem/router (modem with 4 LAN ports+ wifi), unfortunatly this means I'll need a second router to conect my XBOX to.

So the qusetion is: Can it be done?

I don't know much about setting up a network, to me it would seem logical that the modem needs to forward to the router and the router to the XBOX.

Any thoughts, maybe one of the triple screen guys runs a similar setup?

The reason I want to move my modem is that I'm 90% sure that the wifi is interfearing with the XBOX controllers and/or my PWTS. I am sure that both the wifi and XBOX controlers use the 2.4GHz band.

My setup is the cable modem to my 4 port router and then I have a 10 port switch. The router gives out all the ip's to each port on the router and switch. Two routers would conflict each trying to give ip addys afaik.

Turn your existing router in to a Modem only, and set up new router as the DHCP server with the gateway set to IP of the modem. (some have uplink ports.)  If your existing router has modem only mode then use that and the port specified, if not, then you'll have to disable the DHCP on it and DMZ the ip on the router - all traffic will pass to that active port anyway.

The trickier part is that some routers block broadcasts, so ips cannot be given to devices that are not on the same virtual network.  This can be slightly more technical to sort out and a router is required to have (name escapes me) a switch does not have this problem as it sends any packets it receives to all ports. (unless managed)

It depends on the model/makes of your routers/modem as to what would be best.  Presently I have a virgin media (netgear) router/modem running as a modem only which forwards all traffic to the actual router (cisco.)  The xbox is DMZ on the cisco and the cisco is much better at routing traffic.

Hope that helps :)

EDIT - I've read that as you having a 2nd router already, if not then a switch will be sufficent and there would be no change to your existing set up.

Thanks guys, I think I'll go the switch route.

My modem is a Thomson 780w with locked isp firmware.

You've got me thinking on this now!

How many of the eithernet ports are actually in use? if its just the xbox then you can use things such as "home plugs" to connect xbox to the router.  Likewise, you can use them to connect a switch to the router.  Also, look for a Gig switch ideally.

All four ports are in use, XBOX, PS3, PC and PVR (TV over ip). Exact model name of my modem is Thomson speedtouch ST780WL.

Then a switch, connected via wire to the router will be a good bet :)

I assume that you have already managed to open your ports to the xbox already? :)

Yeah, ports are open thanks to www.portforwarding.com . Hope to test tonight if moving my modem solves the controler disconect issues, just got to be carefull and not break my neck over the network cables that temporarely run over the floor.

If the test seems sucsesfull I'll buy a nice gig switch tomorow.

Again thanks for you insight.

Of to the shop! Just ran tracknight, no disconects, double shifts and the force feedback seemed a bit better in the small movements.
