Texas-based Hennessey Performance is claiming the production car top speed record, after its $1.2 million Venom GT hit 265.7 mph on an airstrip in California.The 1,244 hp coupe accelerated for two miles down a runway at US Naval Air Station Lemoore on February 9th with test driver Brian Smith at the wheel, and was still gaining momentum when it reached the braking zone.

On the7,500-foot-long runway at Houston Ellington Field, the 1,244 hp car blasted from 0 to 230 mph in less than 20 seconds before it ran out of room.

"Unlike the million or so dollar original's 1,244 hp turbocharged 7.0-liter V8, the engine in the new $1.25 million Venom GT2 will put out 1,500 hp, which company owner John Hennessey says computer models predict will be good for a top speed of 287 mph."

Well, Johnson City Tennessee is just a couple miles down the road, #3 per capita in the US I'm told...plenty of people willing to drive!

Anf that's the current modle, 1200 hp or so, the new one's projected to 1500 hp.
