In short, nobody is really happy with the lack of content and sheer repetitiveness.
The game has been out less than a week lol. I'll venture to bet they haven't put in the time to reach 24+ and see that loot drops and quality go up significantly as your Cryptarch rank raises. Oh well. I think consumer base will overwhelm the ho hum reviews and Bungie has enough financial backing to continue adding and tweaking to improve the game.
Apparently, consumer reviews are going against the game mag reviews. I can't confirm it. It was a comment by Claude Errera of destiny.bungie.org.
IGN loved Halo 4 but a certain segment of fans thought just the opposite and to this day denegrate IGN over their review score.
Here's a Forbes article that touches on the very interesting (to me, anyway) fact that review scores for Destiny are low but gamers seem to like it - even though the general consensus seems to be it's not very good:

I see a lot of dislike for the game on various forums and we aren't going to hear from many of the people that have already moved on. I bet Destiny ends up being something people play on the side while enjoting the latest game that tickles their fancy.. I'm just trying to level up to be able to particpate in raids. I may grab my crucilbe marks each week as well. I think about trading it everytime it feels annoyingly repetetive or Crucible's lameness gets under my skin. For now, it's the only game I have other then Titanfall which I have put into semi-retirement.
I have learned again, game media outlets are just another form of entertainment. Some are good at their jobs, some aren't.
Good game reviewers are supposed to provide a mix of both objective and subjective information. No matter what the final score is, a consumer should be able to make an informed decision about buying or continuing to invest in a game. Siskel and Ebert were my mainstay for movie reviews. Even with two thumbs down, I could discern whether I should invest in a movie or not.
I paid the same amount for Destiny as I did for all of my previous AAA titles. Measured against all of my favorite games, Destiny is the best made game. I'm not saying it is my most liked game. I'm saying it is the best value game within this given period of play time. My money was well spent. The final question will be, will I continue to invest time and money to extend the life of this game? The short term answer is yes but the long term is still cloudy.
Anybody who was in the Beta knew whether or not to invest in it. Responsibility for the purchace, is completely on them.
You have to be joking, your saying from the Beta we should know whether or not the game is going to be shit?!?! So your saying reading the first page of a book is enough to know if you want to read the whole thing? No offense and im not trying to be a dick but you have to be dumb to beleive that.
The game lacks what was promised, and even though im having a blast im tired of the repetitive crap in this game. I went back to the same hive on the moon like 4 or 5 times! Theres 1 home base in the Tower, somehow with millions of people playing the game you only see maybe 5 on your ENTIRE map at once. It may be the best made game and value out of the 3 pieces of over hyped crap we got in Destiny, Watch Dogs, and Titanfall. Titanfall being the worst by far! WHAT A JOKE OF A GAME!
There is 3 factions in this game and you get no background on them, no special areas where they survive. The game is an empty shell of promises when all they had to really do was look at what World of Warcraft did with their amazing vast world and stick it in a shooter. I am no game developer but im pretty sure it could have been done rather easily. This game could have been something that people played for 10 years and just bought expansions for. Unless these expansions are MASSIVE, I can only see myself playing this game until the end of the year IF THAT. Maybe I got my moneys worth out the game but I wanted to get ALOT more then my moneys worth.
Bottom line is gaming is becoming this huge money pit that developers just want to HYPE the hell out of the game instead of making the game they actually promise upon, because the game is so hyped up they make a ton of money off the consumer. I for one am getting tired of EMPTY promises from developers, when I get more depth from a fucking sports game its really sad.
All that being said I love the game and am having fun but I am still extremely angry at the lack of content and repetitiveness of the game.
No way am I joking!
Gamers were damn lucky to have an extensive Beta and for some of those same people an Alpha. If a person came out of the Beta unsure of buying Destiny they should have rented it.
You are being offensive, you are a dick and I'll respond in kind. Go fuck yourself, you offensive dick.
Im sorry for calling you dumb you must be smart if you know from a beta exactly how many guns, quests, gear, areas to explore, how much endgame content, instances, and everything else that was planned. You must be the developer!!! Saying someone should know wether to buy a game from the first few hours a game is absolutely absurd, exspecially for an MMO type game. There should be much to much content to explore! Yes you can get an idea of what the gameplay is like and for a simple multiplayer game like COD a Beta is enough, but for a game with lots of content a beta is only a tiny sample and that is exactly what the beta was. So I go back to what I said before, anyone who thinks you should know whether to buy a game after playing a few hours of a MMO is dumb.
Titanfall did not suck because of the gameplay aspect of it, It was one of the funnest multiplayer games ive ever played but when you unlock all the content it offers after a week or less the game turns to shit. For example I put 100s of hours into BF4 and still did not unlock everything it offers. For just a multiplayer game Titanfall was the biggest let down in content EVER!
Titanfall is a way better then Destiny. It just depends what ya like.
Those review scores are in line with what I thought would be coming for this game. While I am enjoying the PvE for the most part, I totally detest the PvP.
I've been playing all day just to see if there's something I'm missing in the game.
So far this is what I think......

The guys I played with at launch have already sold it. I envy them. Mine was purchased digitally.
i guess this this is the reason I don't understand the hate on the game. In Halo and Borderlands after you finish the story, everything is basically the same gunfight over and over. Destiny is double the length of any halo game, and that doesn't include raids. Borderlands I sprint about 4 hours after I beat the game and never played again. Borderlands had coop levels, but so does Destiny. You can still tweak your character endless easily after hitting 20. I just don't understand the hate.
i guess its a victim of its own hype. The marketing actually had a detrimental effect because there were literally NO SUPRISES from the ads. They had literally shown every cutscene but the last one, which was noting special. I purposefully avoided all adverts until the couple the week before release - and I already knew the whole story.
if they hadn't over promised and overhyped, this game would have gotten an 8 at worst.
Goddamn lots of iPad typos. I ain't fixing them.
Destiny re-affirmed my age old rule...Always always always buy a used copy of a game. Ive been lured in too many times by hype or a great demo for a game that turned out to be a turd.
Destiny isnt a turd, but its over hyped by a long shot. Playing the beta didnt show the repetativeness and lack of content...well, it did, but I thought..its just the beta...
Buying used gives me a 7 day trial period with the actual game. If it doesnt do it for me, I get my money back.
At least I get some back if I decide to trade it in.
I dont know how some of you look forward to digital only delivery. No thanks.
I'm kinda stuck with digital downloads right now because my 360 has a bum DVD drive (after 6 years of cigarette smoke and cat hair abuse so I'm not complaining.) I was thrilled when I found out that if I bought Destiny for my beat up 360 that I could not only get it for "free" when I upgraded to an XOne but also continue right where I left off.
So... my plan was to download Destiny at launch then buy an XBone for Christmas (you know, for the kids) and keep grinning. Then I thought about Titanfall. I decided to do what I did when Titanfall launched: watch Twitch and YouTube for a week (trying to avoid spoilers) before swiping any credit cards - exhibit a little of that pesky self control that comes with maturity, ya know?. I'm really glad I waited. Lots of folks seem to like the game so it can't suck THAT much, but waiting and watching has sold me on the fact that the game just isn't made for me. It's too multiplayer focused (I like multi as an option not a requirement) for my taste. I do feel a bit sad that Bungie doesn't wanna make games for people like me any more. And I find it odd, as there are millions and millions of people like me... and we are nice people... with lots of money! That last bit was more for Activision than Bungie but, you know...
To each their own, the only game that I've played and not liked that everyone has is the Batman game. Within five minutes I hated it, but Destiny I love and Tititanfall I thought was awesome. No complaints just enjoy having fun with my peeps. Eveyone else seems to nit pick, not everyone is going to like every game. Personally, if you don't like a game I like I don't care what you have to say about it. If you like a game that I like, then I will listen to you talk about how great it is otherwise it just sounds like whining to me. Because really misrey loves company and there seems to be quite a bit of company for all you Deebie Downers out there.
Amen Radikal. Give me a beautiful game with excellent gameplay any day of the week. Content is content. Over time everything becomes repetitious. I enjoy it a ton, well over 30 hours logged already.
Stuff to keep you into it... Some of the gamer score achievements are linked to clan membership (Raids & Strikes). Some of the achievements are linked to the three different player models. So many different gun, grenade and abilitiy combinations - to keep you occupied. Learning how best to level up is.... tedious.
Love the quality of the graphics. Have you looked at another player upclose? The detail quality is surprising.
Hate the invite/join network aspects - don't always work - where Halo almost always works great. Miss playing splitscreen with my daughter. Now, we take turns when she's home (she says I'm too bossy when it's her turn at the sticks!). Strike missions are definitely worth watching as a spectator.
There should have been some story prep in the months leading up to release, so players could understand the characters and motivations for the storyline. Maybe a book or two...
Can't see stats and the other stuff on the xbox... What's up with that? Where's the theatre mode?
It's really hard for a diehard Halo fan to like anything else...
I apologize if I have given the impression that I am 'filled with hate' because of Destiny. I can't speak for others but my involvement in Destiny discussions is for no other purposes than education and entertainment. I'm interested in why people do and don't like the game. The thing that REALLY tosses my noodles at night is why the hell Destiny (or any other game) could become the most pre-ordered game in history. I just do not understand why, after SO MANY "over-hype" disappointments (especially of late) people are still pre-ordering games! And then BITCHING! If you have 10 cases of snake oil on your shelf, why, in the name of gawd are you buying an 11th? What is wrong with you? Fool me once; shame on you. Fool me three times in the same year...??? : )
Oh! And please, please excuse my sloppy typing, lack of edits, and double posts. The wife's birthday is this Wednesday and she's getting a keyboard for her iPad. I'm hoping this will make some of my posts a bit more legible. They'll still be pointless, mind you, but much easier to read ; )
Oh! And when I said: "How long have you been playing?" I was actually asking (anyone who feels like chiming in) how much time you put into the game. Hours? Days? And when I asked: " Do you think the game will hold your interest past next week?" I was asking a pretty impossible question to answer, so I'll take that one back. I was not "challenging" -- there's no fan-boi bullshit there. I was actually asking questions for the purpose of collecting information that might help me decide if I want to 'damn the torpedoes' and grab the game now or wait until it's $40 and has two years of patches and DLC to download. I'm still thinking the game really isn't for me... but who knows? Anyway... I hope I did not offend with my questions. I can see how they might read as a bit dickish. Rest assured they were written out of curiosity not spite.
No, sorry - It was my post that was worded poorly. You didnt offend at all. I wasnt trying to say you were being irrational. I just made an overly generalized comment that wasnt directed at you specifically. I apologize for the confusion.
I guess I have read too many comments on other boards that seem to relish in the fact that they believe it isnt a good game. To me, personally, it is Halo and/or Bordlands Plus. To others, it is worse than Titanfall (that got a 9 and had no single player at all).
To more directly answer your question - I dont know how many hours I have played, but its quite a few. Im level 24. Like any Halo game, tit should hold my interest for at least 2ish months. That was without leveling and raids though. And I will come back for expansions, new raids, etc. Fortunately, this winter is going to be good. Shadows of Mordor (maybe) DA3, Halo MCC, Destiny Expansion in December and Halo 5 beta at the end of December. Its going to be a good winter.
And since you brought up fanboi. I feel I should disclose I should have a life size 6 foot tall Halo 2 Master Chief Display statue (the one with dual SMGs) at my house. So I am a bit of a Halo/Bungie fanboi. That being said - mistakes were made in this game and they need to fix them. I am pretty confident they will. Even in its current form, I am having fun.
I have to agree the repeativeness does suck, and I wish there was going to be more to do right away. But I'm enjoying the game!! Level 17 Titan. I bought this game for the PvE with my friends. I'm just about done with the major campain and I plan on collecting all the ghoest and chest and doing mulitple runs of the strickes while I wait for the raids to come out. Was wondering around on Earth yesterday and found a section that had a name, but the door was blocked. Name had "King" in it.
"And since you brought up fanboi. I feel I should disclose I should have a life size 6 foot tall Halo 2 Master Chief at my house. "
Oh dear! gawd! I waited in line at midnight for Halo 2... and I was REALLY disappointed by that game! It's THE game that convinced me that pre-ordering and camping out were NOT good ideas!
Um, since we're coming clean... I bought, and read, two Halo novels. And one of my most prized possessions is an original series Star Trek phaser II. It hangs on my office wall... right next to the framed picture of my first World of Warcraft character. But I'm NOT a fanboi!! I'm not! I'm not! : )
