NAS Server
Anybody run one of these? I have a few external drives around which are starting to pile up and would like to consolidate them into one area. I am thinking of trying one of these out mainly in Raid 1 for family photos and videos.
I have both Mac and PC so I am trying to figure out how I would work it.
We have a number of them at the office, but if you're wanting to go it the home method and you have an older box lying around you can just get FreeNas.
PROJECT: http://freenas.org
Hardware Recommendations: http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Hardware_Recommendations
32bit / 64bit versions are available, supports all major OSs.
I've been considering one of these for a bit, but I haven't taken the time.
I've got a crap load of drives I just have sitting around, and I've got an older Antec server case w/ enough room and power for 6 drives.
Thanks. I am going to have to look into that.
If you want a little more look at Amahi. Takes a little more to get setup but offers a butt load of apps and stuff. I think it also uses 'greyhole' which is redudant pooling.

shit, I forgot about amahi. That's a very very nice system.
Some good info there guys. Thanks for your help. Gives me some food for thought.
