Man, despite it's flaws I really loved this game.  I only have the original version, haven't picked up Dark Arisen yet, but it's one of the few games in my Xbox library that I not only finished but played through twice.  Not sure what tips I can offer... don't travel at night until you level up some, make sure at least one of your pawns has healing and curing spells...

I played mainly as an Assassin on my first play through with a Fighter main pawn and two casters as my hired pawns.  Decide on a class you like playing and try to stick to it, at least try to switch back when you are about to level up as your stats improve based on the class you are when you level.  I didn't know about this when I played the first time and spent a lot of time trying out the different classes.  Playing as a Strider and gaining levels as a Mage or something will gimp you in the long run.

Try to hire pawns that are several levels above your current level if you can afford them as they don't level up with you.  You won't have to hire new pawns as often and they will survive better in combat.
