New Gears of War player

Heyo all, Like the title says I'm new to the Gears franchise. I had some credit at Gamestop and decided to pick a few things up.

Gears of War - $2.69

Gears of War 2 - $4.49

Gears of War 3 - $13.49

(Plus Bioshock: Ultimate Rapture Edition)

Not bad for the $50 or so in credit I had. I've never played any of the GoW series(or Bioshock series either) so I thought I'd start with GoW. I can only play a few hours a day usually, and sometimes less than that. So last Thursday or so I started up GoW. Finished it last night. I have to say I am really, really on the fence so far.

The campaign length wasn't too long or too short, and the story was mostly good, though I think it was a bit choppy at times. Keeping in mind the game came out 6 or so years ago the graphics were definitely decent enough. The game play is what I'm on the fence about. I really like the move and cover system. There were times when I really felt like there was an active dynamic battle going on and that was pretty cool. The 'boss' type encounters were pretty staged, but I guess that's what boss encounters are supposed to be so it doesn't lose many points for that. I did like that whenever you needed a specific weapon to take something down, like the satellite weapon(hammer of dawn? something like that?) the game always made sure to provide you with one that was accessible in the area where the boss battle was to take place. That was a nice touch.

What I didn't like was that a lot of aspects that were more 'platform/puzzle solving' were not very intuitive. Now I'm not always the sharpest tool in the shed but I think I'm a pretty smart guy, but, and I hate to say this, I had to go online to look up how to get past some areas, especially the end battle. The end battle took me approximately 50 minutes to get through, dying time after time after time. Until I looked it up I had no idea the bat things were actually acting as a shield. I really wasn't sure what I was supposed to do. Leave cover and run - get shot. Make it after about 10 tries to the turret, nope not supposed to use that, the bat things kill you. The guide I read suggested using the bow and aiming for Raam's head, nice if you've got the bow. Ultimately I just stayed behind cover and fired as much ammo as possible until he finally died. It was less than satisfying. Keep in mind this is on casual level.

So between the non-intuitive aspects and the collecting of the cog tags I felt like I kept getting pulled out of the game, which is unfortunate because as I said, the action/cover system and some of the battles were really fantastic.

After the game just for fun I decided to pop onto mp. Holy cow, there are still people who play the mp for the original GoW? Played one 3 round 4v4 game where 2 on each side dropped. We lost but I think I might have almost gotten a kill, heh. The next game I quick matched into was a lot longer...25 minutes this game went on for. It was first to 10, and the score was us 10 them 9 at the end. I did way more damage to my team than helping them with a whopping 2 kills, 3 downs, and 1 recovery. I have to say I'm not sure I like the mp experience. I'm a Halo player, have been since the first one came out, and it just doesn't feel right to me. Then again that was Gears 1, so we'll see how I feel about it when I get through Gears 2. Which as a matter of fact I'm going to start here in about 5 minutes.

Thoughts, comments, questions, am I missing something?

First off welcome to the wonderful world of gears!!!!  I think you will enjoy some of the changes in weapons, gameplay, etc that you will experience as you progress though the franchise... Gears 1 was very choppy compared to 2 and 3 the graphics get much better and gameplay has been smoothed out.... The final battle in 1 was a pain in the arsz I think I spent at least 2 hours trying to figure that on out.  Much easier doing it coop.. Keep us posted as to your progress and welcome!!

Heyo again,

Finished up Gears 2 this morning.  I think it took about 10.5 hours or so, so that was a decent length for a campaign, not too short, not too long.  Needless to say graphically it was much better than Gears.  The story had better pacing and was overall much more solid.  Dialogue was good, though I'm a bit disappointed by the stereotypical aspects of Cole's character.  I do like the way they aren't afraid to kill off characters, it sucks to see one you like die, but it also helps reinforce the nature of the world those guys are trying to survive in.

Once again the boss battles, especially Skorge were relatively unsatisfying and gimmicky.  The game really shines when you've got a battle against a bunch of the locusts and you can use cover to move and attack from.  You guys were right, I did like the new weapons.  45

Haven't ventured into the mp aspect of Gears 2 and I don't think I will.  I think I'll use my time to jump right into Gears 3 before the Super Bowl starts up.

Wish me luck!
