Planescape Torment
Planescape Torment
Don't know if any of you ever played this, but this might be one of the biggest gaming influences ever in my life. Probably still stands out as some of the most developed dialogue game ever...clever, pithy, humorous, etc. The narrative in the game is probably better than any game I have played in my 30+ years of gaming.
Anyway, the reason I posted this is I came across some news this weekend that a new upcoming Torment game is on the horizon...not really a sequel per se, but crafted in the spirit of the first. More importantly, it is not just a rehash of an old popular title by a company who bought the rights, but had no hand in the making of the magic of the original. The talent involved are some of the biggest names from back in the day, being made with the indie game mindset, and attempting to preserve (reinvent) some of the magic of the old RPG games. They are crowdfunding the project through Kickstarter and they raised over 2 million dollars in the first 24 hours of annoucing it....they are just under 5 million now with over 75K backers. To bring this full circle, they are now bringing on writers to help with the storylines...bestselling authors even to preserve the reputation of well developed story and narrative (and one of my recent favorites Patrick Rothfuss!!!). Anyway, if you love old school RPGs created on the D&D platform of rules, navigate over to the Kickstarter site and give it a peep. Lots and lots of cool perks for backing.
Oh and if you want to replay Planescape Torment or are intrigued enough after this to try it, you can get it on GOG for 10 bucks.
I played it...almost to the end. My PC was too slow at the time and it kept locking up. It was an awesome game. I need me a flaming skull pet.
