Anyone have experience with some of the compact waterproof cameras currently on the market? Looking for an option other than my Canon SLR to bring to my family vacation this summer.
Here is a pic a friend took of me while snorkeling this weekend with his Sony. I really wasn't impressed with the image. maybe photobucket jsut compresses the image too much.
I have an Olympus waterproof camera and would not recommend buying one. After the first time I took it underwater, the internal sensors were covered in moisture and it required warranty repair. Now the battery doesn't charge properly.
Also, it is very difficult to get a good picture underwater period. I don't know if it's the camera itself, or if it's just tough in general.
On a side note, if you have an iPhone, have you looked into the lifeproof cases? They're supposed to be very good, half the price of an underwater compact camera, and something you'll use beyond your vacation.
JP - don't have an iPhone. Never been happy with the pictures from my Galaxy sIII
Overall I don't want to bring my large Canon SLR on our cruise. Looking for something compact that takes good underwater and action shots. The problem I found is that most compact cameras have pretty bad shutter lag (the time from when you push the button and the camera actually takes the pic.
I have the Pentax Optio W60 which I have used on several snorkling trips/cage diving. The latest version is the WG-4. Sample pic I took while cage diving with White Sharks.
Thanks everyone. Went out and bought the Olympus TG-2 and so far I'm very happy with it. Not the same quality of my dSLR, but for a waterproof point and shoot its pretty damn good.
Well there are a few options.
Sony, Olympus or Panasonic

Plain old camera phone shot.
