Do We Really Need to be Taxing Video Games?
I came across this article today. A guy I used to go to High School with co-wrote the paper mentioned in the article (Michael Thomas) which was pretty cool.
Regardless of political beliefs, I don't want to have to pay more for my games just because some political prick does not understand the role of games and the lack of a connection to violent behaviour and just sees it as an easy target.
I do agree that parents should limit kids to age appropriate games though. But that is another rant...
Edit: Link not working
I'm sure the government will look at any popular revenue generating areas for tack-on taxes to help bring in the tax revenue shotfalls. Video games are big business now, that's the unfortuniate side effect of increasing gaining popularity.
But as a consumer, no i don't want it. I'm against any more of my money going towrds government pockets.
I think one of the main reasons ( other than user revolt, hehe) that cigarettes are still around is all the tax money the government bleeds off them.
Most taxes, fees, licenses, registrations, etc. are the result of governments insatiable need for our money. Sure, there are things it's needed for, but if the government were tasked with making automobiles they'd weigh 6000lbs, get 3 miles to the gallon and be as reliable as a 70's FIAT...and probably not deliver on time.
Also what do they define as a violent?
Racing can be pretty violent if you make it that way.
