How good is the 360 Elite? Slim upgrades?
I am on my 4th original white Xbox 360 and I am looking at used consoles at the local Game Exchange. Do the black, elite 360s still have the RRoD issues that the white ones do?
How hard is it to add a regular laptop hard drive to the 4Gb slim model?
as far as the elite goes I think it depends on the board, but I am not sure.
You can do this with your old HD for the slim. Point of note, just make sure you have a way to get the hd out of the slim, since the "case is missing" there might be some play around the hd. I know you are pretty technical, so you can figure out what to do and what needs ot be protected to prevent static shock and shit.

The black Elite 360's still had RRoD issues. The later in the manufacturing cycle , the better their cooling was but they still could overheat. My Elite died with an e74 error or something.
If you want to try and add your own hard drive to a drive-less Slim, here are the instructions. It involves doing some hackery to the drive on a PC first before putting it in your 360. Optionally i've seen some cheap knock-off chinese drives for the slim that I assume already have this hackery done to them and come in the slim hdd enclosure too.

I have found enclosures that allow me to use a laptop drive. They run only $5 or so but I would need to do the hard drive hacking myself but that doesn't look too difficult from the link you posted.
I am not really interested in using the drive from my old 360 as it is only 20Gb.
Just make sure you buy a drive that the article lists as supported for the software used to write the xbox stuff. You can't use just any drive, you need touse one the software supports.
When I got my slim I did the same as the Vid above with my elite HDD.
I made a little U shape out of the procective foam that came with the slim to hold the drive in place. No issues a year on
I like my Slim. If you're a Halo fan, you might simply want to wait for the Halo 4 console, it comes with Halo 4 exclusives to console owners, and it looks pretty sweet. If my last Xbox would've lasted a little longer, I definitely would have gotten the Halo 4 console.
I'm trying to spend as little money as possible so the new Halo 4 box is out.
I wouldn't be into buying a new expensive themed console at this point with the 720 most likly dropping next November.
What I thought was funny when they came out with the slim was actually due to the new drive interface. I thought, damn, it looks like PS3 now. Ha!
I had one Elite system. Lasted me a week before it did an e74 on me.
