I have a job interview Monday.
I have a job interview Monday.
So I have a job interview Monday. I'm excited and terrified at the same time. I've been with my current employer a little over 8 years now, and change is kinda scary for me.
The reason I'm trying to leave my current employer is simple. I've been asking for a raise for the last 3 years, have been taking on more and more responsibilities, and have seen no increase in my pay. So it's time to move on. I'm getting nowhere at this place. And I leave there hellaciously stressed everyday, and so drained that I can't work on any personal projects.
2 weeks ago, I wrote the owners of the business a letter explaining my situation, that gas prices, the cost of living and all of that has gone up considerably. That I would be willing to take on more responsibilities than I already have, listed what I currently do for them, what it would cost to get someone else to do it, and asked for a healthy raise in exchange for doing more work.
No response, no reply, and no increase in pay. No feedback whatsoever. So I don't even know if they care if I show up for the damn job at this point.
So in any case, I decided to start looking elsewhere and found a potential opportunity.
Current job I work Monday - Friday, get about 36 hours total, $10.50 an hour. The shop closes early on Fridays, otherwise it'd be 40 hours. I design, typeset, run copiers, process bulk mailing jobs, deal with customers, answer phones, keep up with my own jobs ontop of the jobs of the other designer......and more. For $10.50 an hour. My dad has a less involved job and he makes about $28-$30 an hour at Kimberly Clark.
New potential job is for a graphic design position at a iWanta classifieds magazine, night shift, Sunday, Monday & Tuesday nights. Not sure about pay yet, but night shift generally gets paid more, and it's guaranteed 40 hours. A little bit of a longer trip there. But hey...potentially more money, less days to work.
This job could open the door for me to finally start my own little side studio project for making props, costume stuff, and make short films. I'd have the time during the week to work on it. It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid. My grandfather got me into film making big time when I was little. He showed me how they edited film, how special fx makeup and stuff worked. He and a few of his old friends used to make spaghetti western flicks over weekends for fun. He passed on that film-makers passion to me. And with youtube the way it is....you don't need Hollywood to distribute your film.
So I'm nervous and excited. I'm trying not to get overly hyped....because I haven't gotten the job. But hopefully they will see my level of skills, talent and 8+ years of design experience and decide that they really want me on their staff.
Here's hoping.
Show them your passion and desire to work there and you'll do well I'm sure.
It sounds like a much better opportunity.
Best of luck!
Best of luck buddy. If anyone deserves to get the leg up, you do!
Sounds like you have loads of skills. If your employer doesn't value you then time to say bye bye.
Good luck!
Follow your passions!
Hope it goes/went well. It seems like the only way to get any decent wage increase these days is to employeer surf.
w00t! I got the job! They told me after the interview that it would be a day or two before I received any word.
Not 2 hours later....phone call. "We'd like to offer you the position."
So YUSH!
$14 an hour w/benefits and a 401K option.
So now the joy of breaking the news to my soon to be ex-employer.
Congratulations!
Congrats man! Did you have to show any nipple ?
Awesome! You must have made a great impression! Congrats :)
WWWWOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Movin on up!!! Congrats. I just went through the same situation recently. Did a lot of work and didn't get a raise, etc... I got laid off
Dang sounds like that interview paid off!.. Congrats man
Yes. I officially start on the 23rd.
It's gonna be a deadline-heavy kind of job, but I'm cool with that. As little downtime as possible is always better. I'm there to work and make that bread.
Then I have 4 glorious days to myself to work on my arcade cab, gears armor and whatever else I feel like doing during that time. It's gonna be magical.
Awesome news man! Congrats!
Can't wait to see your progress on that Gears armor
Congrats! But I noticed you didn't answer the nipple question....
Yes....I too noticed a lack of nipple explanation.
Come on Gatsu...there's no shame in showing a little nipple. Just so long as you don't bang your head on the desk at the end of the interview.
Just imagine what it made Gatsu spit!
( you know I love ya Gatsu )
Um. Fuck you all.
I don't have a opening at the moment but I mean....if you're giving out freebies.
That's great! Very happy for you Gatsu :)
Thanks man.
This is my last week with my current employer and I couldn't be happier.
Got some horse shit tossed at me friday from the soon to be old job. He's scared I'm leaving. We already had one customer take his work elsewhere because I won't be there anymore. Another asked for my personal contact info so they could get me to design work for them on the side. He tried to introduce me to someone he was considering hiring in my place. The guy worked there before I started, apparently screwed the shop over pretty hard a couple of times. They've talked shit about this guy numerous times before. But obviously never to his face. So I'm like....you're hiring douche canoe here and getting him to do everything I wrote down on that letter I gave you 2 weeks ago?....and he screwed you over?
See about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago I decided it was time to ask my boss for more money. Never really easy to do. I don't get feedback from him so it's hard to tell if he cares or not. So I wrote out a pretty lengthy letter, with a plan of attack that will improve the business, offered suggestions and even offered to take on a lot more responsibility in exchange for this raise. I thought it was fair.
He said it was a well written letter and that we would talk about it. 2 weeks later and not a single goddamn word about it. So I looked for another job that paid more and found one a lot quicker than I expected. I put in my 2 weeks, now he's talking about doing all these improvements and has these grandiose ideas....all that were in the letter I gave him by the way. So they are my ideas and suggestions. The ones he ignored until I told him I was leaving.
So my ass is extremely chapped about it.
I want to leave the place in a positive manner, but I have a feeling that someone is gonna make a slip up, say something ignorant to me, and I'm gonna unload on them verbally because that will be the straw.
But it's my last week. Worst case, I just walk. I don't want to do that, but I'm not gonna take any more horse shit either. I've taken it for 8 years now.
Gats, everything you said about that place is seriously fucked up. I can see why your ass is chapped and don't blame you at all for wanting to blow up on the next person that breathes at you wrong. That being said however, be the bigger man and not only do your job in these last few days....but do it in the best way you know how. Kill em' with kindness and show that nothing they have done or could do will get to you. Keep in mind that you're not only moving on, but moving up and away from the shit hole they will be stuck in long after you're gone.
Don't let them get under your skin, don't let them win. You've already won man, you got the bigger better deal. Leave the place you work now with a smile on your face, knowing that it will be severely lacking without you there.
gratz!
