Need help! Attention all you techie, out side the box, super geeks!

My friend is going to be partaking in a triathalon in 9 weeks and I want to some how get a word printed out on a sticker and put it on her solid wheel for her bike. As the wheel spins it will spell out I EAT SOULS as the wheel is spinning.

Now my questions. How the hell do I do that.

Think of how one of those LED fans work. Pictured below:

But how do I do that without having to put leds and a battery pack on her bike.

Is this even possible without LED's?

LED's are just the display medium of choice, not part of the illusion.  We've all seen car wheels that look still or are going backwards in the next lane, same thing.

Figuring out how to calibrate your message so that it works at the right speed is going to be the trick.  Have no idea how to go about that, but once you get it, you could just have a decal printed out and adhere it to her wheel and it will work.

I definetly won't know how to make something like this. But, i don't think just sticking a decal on the wheel cover would work. It'll have to be a strobe light type of thingy I've seen those fans before. If you stop the fan do the leds blink?

Something to do with the natural wavelength of perceived light through eyes and rotation of the wheel coinciding to create a standing visible message. We do something similar with a strobe at work to determine RPMs.

Sounds like you need an engineer.(sorry)

Or you could just buy one for $25 if she had spoked wheels.  Google, "wireless custom bike wheel message".

Actually I know her rear wheel is solid, but I am not sure about her front wheel. I just sent her a message to find out.

The only thing that worries me, if that thing were to fall off and cause her to crash, she would hunt me down and kill me in the slowest most painfull way imaginable.

She is trying to qualify for Kona, so hopefully this would not add much weight ot her bike.

Under continuous lighting conditions (not a stoboscopic effect like those produced by an LED) you would probably need a spoke pattern of fairly precisely placed pixels that would look like a circular decal with a swirly design of dots.

What it would look like in motion would be crazy subjective.  Different people would process even the exact same image differently based on some minute differences in how they process visual information.  The greater challenge is that you don't have control of most of the conditions under which the image is being processed- including viewing angle, lateral vector, ambient light, rotational speed and the background it is travelling across.

Maybe just pass her a bottle of gatorade at mile fifty instead.

Congrats to your friend though.  With or without wheel messages a triathlon is an admirable feat.

Agreed, she is 44 and just started doing this about 2-3 years ago. She is now not just finishing them, but she is finishing in the top 3-5 for her age bracket at every one she enters. She is a god damn freak of nature.
