Need some home server help
OK, So i want to turn on old PC into a home web/media server. I do a lot of Web App programming and want to be able to test locally on a home server before I go live on the web with it. Plus I want to make it a media server for music and movies etc.... Suggestions on OS and places I might look to get this set up. All advice and help is appreciated,
F1R3
how old is this computer? any specs on it?
it's possible to do it with xp pro, especially since you're going to be doing it locally. it handles media services seemlessly, if that is even a reality.
i don't know what kind of web apps you're working with, but it shouldn't really matter. windows server is just xp pro with registry tweaks. as long as the computer can handle the load, it should work just fine.
I'm sure it can handle the load. a lot of this is coming from a situation where last semester I had my computer crash and I lost everything for school 2 programming finals and a 7 page written final BOOM Lost. Luckily I spent 72 hours, almost straight and was able to reprogram everything and write my paper again. Don't want to do that again. When it comes to server software and setting it up, I'm really have no idea. Wam if you get sometime in the next few days and if you think you can walk me through Ideas and how to's I'd really appreciate it.
yeah...maybe site chat or something? forums would be ok just to throw down some ideas and get the ball rolling, but once you start on your end, this wouldn't be very practicle. if it looks like it's a go, i can give you my number or something.
Wam you can get me on Site chat, Skype or the phone. what ever is easier for you.

Check out xxamp.
very interesting, i've never seen that before. this could be something to consider.
does anybody have any experience with this?
Ubunto Linux. Why try to make things work when you can start off with an OS that was built to do all these things right out of the box with millions of installations out there?
i don't know anything about it. i do the IT for a family business that has no budget for any tech. i'm to assume that Fire is working on a limited budget for something in his home. what kind of costs are we talking about?
I believe it is free
well, that might be a good option, but i'm not familiar with it. i don't think i would be much help for you. using xp pro with IIS, i can help.
think about it and i'm willing to help if you want to go my route, if not, maybe some of the others here would be able to assist.
I've used xxamp and it's great. I've since moved to Ubuntu and just config my own server. Ubuntu is and always will be free. Plus, their community is fantastic. They will walk everyone through any issues. And there are a ton tutorials out there, a quick search found this (I'm on vacation and on the wife's iPad, so I picked one of the first returns). If you really want to learn about servers, go with Ubuntu. If you want a quick dev system, go with xxamp.
