I have always been a big fan of Macallan. The Balvenie Caribbean Cask is a clan favorite.
How is the Yamazaki? I have heard good reviews, but never tried it.
They have a 12 yr as well, which I like better than the 18. I think the 12 compares favorable to the Caribbean Cask. To me, the 18 is not as smooth as the 12.
I don't think I've ever heard of Oban. Then again I've only recently grown fond of Scotch. What's a good cheap scotch to test out?
Oban is really soft scotch, expensive though. This is what I had for my second daughter's birth at the hospital. It was a special Oban's Distiller's Edition, and some Balvenie.
I wouldn't recommend you start off with single malt. I would go with a blended scotch to start, mix it with a splash of water or soda. My favorite blended sotch is either Old Par or Swing by Johnnie Wallker. Not to many people have heard of Swing, it's about 35 to 40 bucks a bottle but its amazing. Here's a pic it took at a bar one afternoon.

I hadn't heard of Oban until a business dinner a couple of years ago. It was a wine & dine you event from a financial firm trying to whoo business. One of the chief credit officers sat next to me, and while everyone was about desert, we were looking at the menu of single malts. He suggest Oban 14, as it was a favorite of his. I have had it a few times since, and really enjoyed it.
As for cheap scotch, I would rather have good whiskey stay away from the rotgut. If you have a variety you can begin to develop an appreation for the different flavor profiles. Back in my cigar days I always kept:
Macallan 12 year is always a classic and great introduction. The 18 years is great!
Oban 14 is really good too.
For consistency Macallan can't be beat.
Last weekend.
Someone needs to page Gaius, immediately. This is his jurisdiction.
Oban 14 is one of my favorites, but here is my current collection.

Makes me miss my days when I had a membership to a cigar club that was byob.

Brand Perferred Prep Flavors
MacAllen 12 year: Neat (splash of water) Earthy, Peaty, Smokey (good)
Bulleit Bourbon: Straight Smooth deep carmel undertones
Forty Creek Whiskey On the rocks Light Vanilla overtones
These are all differnet whiskeys, Scotch, Burbon, and Canadian Whiskey, but all went very well with cigars!
I got real sick off that Glenlivet and I can't drink it anymore.
I don't know if trying a cheap Scotch would be worth it Doodi. Although not scotch, Jameson is a fairly economical option that won't hurt you.
well if you're gonna bring Irish Whiskey into this, I like Tullamore Dew.
Well, I would rather drink good scotch but cheap scotch will tear you apart. Better to drink good Irish Whiskey than cheap scotch.
This one was pretty good. Has a nice kick to it.
My bottle was 60.3% by vol.
The Yamazaki is a great drink to have.
If you can find one try Hibiki 12 yr blended.
More easily found is Laphroaig 1/4 cask
If you want to put on your big boy pants track down some Rosebank preferably the 1991
As for Bourbon George T Stagg is the king of them and Thomas H Handy is the King of Ryes
Oban is good. But, it's not my favorite. I would probably pick Balvenie DoubleWood or Glenmorangie Nectar D'or
You can take that Laphroaig and the rest of those Islays and shove 'em.
This is an old picture of my collection.
