XB1 - Detailed network statistics
Out of curiosity, I ran my XB1's "Detailed network statistics" under the Settings/Network tiles. I found the download and upload rates to be rather slow compared to my laptop. So I thought I'd get you guys to run the test and post your results.
ISP Subscription 20Mbs down, 2Mbps up
Laptop Speedtest.net to ISP. 19.82, 1.88
Laptop Network Speed Test Win 8.1 App 15.71, 2.17
XB1 7.44, 0.35
Additiional:
My XB1 path is XB1 - Gigabit switch - router - cable modem
My Laptop path is Laptop - Router - cable modem
My XB1 has also displayed NAT type as both Strict and Open during tests.
Your laptop is connected to XB1 or is that a typo? What are the test results on the XB1 speed test?
Do an apples to apples so the path is the same(device-router, device-switch- router, and the same cables) if you haven't Your gig switch may not be auto-negotiating speed, duplex, etc.. properly with your router. Easiest first test is probably moving the ethernet cable from the Xbox to the laptop and re-run your tests on the laptop. Also. use testmynet instead, better test and you can also schedule tests.
Heck, even the Xbox may not be negotiated with the switch correctly. We are seeing network interfaces on big commercial printers by a big name company have a ton of trouble negotiating with network switches properly. My faith in end device network interface quality has plummeted over the last year or so.
I don't have a Xbone to put through some tests.
It was a typo. Thanks.
The Switch is reports auto negotiation in the green.
I just want a few people to try it and compare their own results with what is expected. I know apples to apples speedtest-ing is nearly impossible without using exactly the same servers. I have no idea what server the XB1 uses or whether we all use different ones around the world or the same one in Seattle.
I will likely try direct connect to the cable modem soon.
Does Xbone have an HTML5 compatible browser? Even though the negotiation looks correct on the fron panel lights it can still be dorked. It even looks fine when dorked in very expensive datacenter and closet switches. PITA. Good luck. It would suck if the Xbone has poor network performance issues.
Never thought of using the IE on XB1. Might give that a try too.
Interesting results in mine. I have Cox ultimate so my download/upload speed is ridiculously high, As to the test I compared my XB1 and lapop:
XB1, ethernet connected to 4 port bridge--->router on 5ghz band--->cable modem--->internet
Laptop, wirelessly connected--->router on 2ghz band--->cable modem--->internet
XB1: 55.71 down, 14.44 up, ping 104 ms
Laptop:
Local: 57.28 down, 26.46 up, ping 10ms
Takoma, Wash (cross country): 33.65 down, 7.5 up, ping 166 ms.
The laptop tests are pretty consistent with what I have tested in the past. When I go cross country, everything slows down, depending on the server I pick. I was a little surpised at the XB1 speeds because I assumed the servers were cross country as well. Maybe there is some regional distribution there.
I've noticed on my XB1, what it thinks the download/upload speed is, is much lower than what my computer things the upload/download speed is. I haven't put any effort into figuring out why though. WOuld be interesting to compare wired vs wireless hookups, vs plugged straight into the modem VS using the XB1 browser to go to the same testing site as I would use on my laptop.
I"m just not that modivated
Can't use speedtest.net or speakeasy.net/speedtest thru IE on the XB1. Requires Adobe Flash and that is not available for IE on the XBOX. Boo!!
Still, you're stinking lucky to have that kind of bandwidth and to top it off, while wireless.
I'm currently beating up your Drivatar with my slow ass connection. So there is that.
You guys try http://testmy.net/ to see if the Xbone browser supports HTML5?
testmynet works on the 360. Apples to apples. 2.6Mbps down on the 360 and 13.6 down on my ancient Acer quad core. I hope MS isn't proxying browser connections. I'll have to try and borrow some hardware from work so I can sniff the 360 to see if it goes through a proxy. My work laptop tests at 10.1Mbps over a wireless bridge connection from the far side of the house. Doesn't look good for MS console network performance so far
I hope your Xbones test better. Oh, if you want to send me a Xbone to test let me know. LOL! I'd love to get my hands on one to test. Media player, go Roku. That little thing rocks. 360 buffers often, Roku doesn't.
After getting a Roku, I CANNOT STAND trying to watch Netflix on my 360! Even opening the Netflix app takes too long on the Xbox. I LOVE my Roku!!! Xbox sucks hard in comparison lol.
Twitch
Hmmm, suspicious. I'll try your suggestion on XB1 soon. Thanks.
Tried testmy.net using IE on the XB1 and got 44.7 on the download and 12.6 on the upload using a local server. Less than the XB1 stats and speedtest on my laptop but fast enough!!
Your testmynet numbers are most likely more realistic.
My ISP is 20 down and 3 up
My Xbone is 12.76 down 1.16 up
* Ran it again this evening. It was 15.54 down and 1.22 up
XB1 Detailed network test XB1 via router 20.08, 0.35, MTU 1480
XB1 Detailed network test XB1 direct to cable modem 20.07, 0.36, MTU 1480
XB1 IE testmy.net via router 2.1 to highly variable, 1.4
XB1 IE testmy.net direct to cable modem 26.1 to highly variable, 1.7
Conclusions from all testing.
My equipment is likely limiting my download speed on XB1.
My equipment is not likely limiting my upload speed on XB1.
The XBox server my XB1 connects to for network tests, is a piece of shit for uploading. I hope that changes going forward.
Perhaps my ISP limits uploading data to XBox servers.
Thanks for everyones input.
Did a couple of tests about month ago. Have Cox and have the 30/5 plan.
Laptop was always faster.
Xbox 1 wired through router/modem 95ms of latency.
Xbox 1 wired through modem only - 95ms latency
I had some packet loss 1 or 2 as I recall.
Bought a new cable modem (one of the fastest) - still 93 ms latency. no packet loss.
I have determined its the location of the server(s) Xbox 1 is connecting to.
I forgot that you can set a different default server for testmynet http://testmy.net/mirror
this is a lot of time wasting. you'll usually not hit your max on average anyway. Plus it doesn't take much upload bandwidth to play online, and that's all you'd need upload for. My download speeds have been super fast - downloaded just as fast as any other download when I bought my games.
The upload speed of 0.37Mbps is barely good enough to gain host in Halo. I base this on a memory of 343i commenting on upload bandwidth required to be host for a party of 16. I sort of remeber them recommending at least 0.5Mbps.
So if my recollection is correct, then I have a problem through my ISP where I should be getting up to ~7 times greater upstream bandwidth.
My recollection is a factor here, for now.
Not really a time waster if you are noticing a problem. Weed out any possible home network issues and glaring ISP issues. The rest is pretty much hope for the best. Over the years, both from home testing and dealing with my home ISP on the comercial consumer side for work, I've learned they are poorly peered to stuff on the east coast. I get better performance to a Dallas co-lo then to a DC co-lo. About 3 times better on average. If you set up automatic testing you can see how your ISP performs during peak and off peak, correlate poor performance to what your tests show. You can identify active traffic management and a very easy way to throttle usage back is to hold up your traffice entering the network which would be your upload. So, while your upload test my be adequate for MP, any traffic management, packet loss, or high latency can hurt your MP experience since MP happens pretty much in real time like a voice over ip phone call.
my point was more that it's moot to test the Xbox. Test the modem if you want and you're curious, but there isn't much you can do about how fast the Xbox will connect, if it's all hooked up correctly and the ports are opened. It'll be how fast it is - you can't make it faster if it's set up right.
I haven't had any speed issues, and since we have the same Xbox One, then weakest link has to be your ISP :)
What an over simplified perspective. Location might be a huge factor.
what? ISP and location are linked. Either way it has nothing to do with the X1.
Good luck getting either company to say the issue is on their end. ISP will tell you to plug your PC directly into the modem and run a speed test. If it's acceptable, not their problem.
