Just picked up the first three comics in Jason Aaron's Thor. Never read much Thor before but I am a fan of Aaron. This looks like it is going to be good.
Yeah, I'm really enjoying the GodKiller storyline, I have the final issue, and I 've been putting off reading b/c I don't want the arc to end lol. This series at least so far was a sleeper for me, I love seeing 3 different age periods of Thor, it really makes for a great read! Plus, I love baby Thor variant for issue #1. I've been going crazy collecting the #1 Skottie young baby variants on the relaunches and have most, but Thor's was just great for me, even better than Cable and the X-Force #1.
My local shop had #1-3 and 5. I am going to order #4 today. I haven't seen the cover you are talking about. I will have to check that out. Being relatively new to comics, I haven't got into variant covers yet. I am still trying to decide if I want to keep buying new comics or turn to buying tpb and read and collect that way.
Well, what Marvel has done with their relaunches is, with every 1st issue, they released a special baby variant cover, that usually doesn't cost any extra. Usually it has that superhero(s) as a baby doing something funny. Like Cable's was a baby Cable complaining about getting new clothes for X-Mas over new toys, lol. X-Men Legacy has Prof. X's kid as a baby popping his tire on his wheelchair. Just fun stuff like that, it ties in with the artist's name Skottie Young, so all the covers are little young kids.
As someone who just recently got back into collecting and reading comics with the relauches of DC and Marvel, it's been nice to be able to kind of have "fresh starts" for new readers. Collection's aren't a bad way to go either, as honestly I don't see many recent comics being worth much money, except for maybe the new Guardians of the Galaxy series releasing this month. It's Marvel's next big "Avengers-esqe" title that takes place Galaxy wide instead of just on Earth, and stars a new batch of heroes and if it's big, might make the comics worth something someday, who knows.
If you get into comics, personally if you worry about variants and stuff you'll just waste money as variants are just ways to get hardcore collectors to spend more money, so only buy what doesn't cost anymore unless you really just love the art. Just buy what's available, read it when you want to, and just keep them bagged and boarded. Paperback collecting is nice, but usually you gotta wait a lot longer for the stories so they can do 2nd and 3rd runs, and some don't include the cover art, and some don't paperback collection, so that's the tradeoff. Here's a couple baby variants
Oh, also here's a great site to order comics from! They ship better than anywhere else I've ever ordered from, they go above and beyond on packing/shipping materials, include bagging and boarding, and usually i can order up 20 comics and only pay maybe $5 for shipping. Also, they give you 15% off for ordering online, and every week they have specials on certain publisher back issues. They sell both trade paperback and comics, even collectibles, they're huge in NYC, and easily the best comic buying website I've visited.
So many are cluttered, and disorganized, and some say they ship well but they dont, and I ended up with bent books, and some like to charge a ton for shipping. I've ordered from here 10 times now in 4 months and never had an issue, package tracking isn't the greatest but for $5 I don't care. Check it out it's called http://www.midtowncomics.com
Thanks for the info. I actually started an order with Midtown. I was going to place it sometime today. Good to know they are trustworthy. The collector in me would rather have individual issues. Like you said, that way I get the individual covers. I will hae to check out Guardians of the Galaxy. I haven't heard of that one yet. Any good sites you can recommend for comics?
Well, other than Midtown, the only other online company that's treated me as well as they have is a place called, Graham Cracker Comics based out of illinois. I've ordered from some of the other big places, like Mile High Comics, and Westfield, but they often have mix ups with their sites b/c they aren't as updated as much and more messy, and hard to navigate sometimes. Plus, they just didn't ship as securely as midtown or grahams.
Mile High has literally so many comics it's just overwhelming and I end up getting confused b/c there's no real organization to their site. It's the best place to go in person though in the country as they have literally every comic ever printed pretty much. If you're from Indiana I know a place in Indy that's not too bad, but only if you live here b/c they don't have a site but ship overnight in state for 6 bucks, otherwise I mainly use the first 2 to pick up whatever my local place doesn't get, also Graham's often sells their 2nd and 3rd for 99 cents a lot which I love and ship for a decent price.
Oh also as new collector there's a few things you should know that has been the source of a lot of misconceptions. Marvel has digital code stickers in some series, that gives you free digital versions of the issue. I like to use these to prevent wear, however, be aware that by peeling the sticker and redeeming the code, if you get that comic professionally graded, they'll dock it .2 points and list you used the code, but won't be treated as a defect.
I don't care about that at all, and would rather take .2 hit to possibly save wear and tear, b/c honestly I enjoy reading and looking at the art, so this allows me to still collect.
Gaurdians of the Galxy will come out in theaters in 2014, the series launches March 27th. It's a reboot of an old series and stars Iron Man, Nova, their leader Star Lord, and a few new others and is kinda like a galactic Avengers. Here's the cover of the upcoming issue "GotG", and the baby variant for Marvel's new big crossover event coming out today "Age of Ultron" and the old but super funny "Avengers #1" baby variant just b/c it's awesome :D
