Diablo III will finally be released next month, but Torchlight II's own street date remains a nebulous "TBA 2012." It may, however, be arriving sooner than you think.

How soon? According Runic CEO Max Schaefer (via Joystiq), it will optimistically be out a month after Diablo III. That would put it sometime in June. Schaefer, however, isn't in a rush.

Rather, Runic's goal is to polish up Torchlight II as much as possible so it doesn't come off as a "cheap" alternative" in the same genre.

Given Schaefer's pedigree -- he was the co-founder of Blizzard North, which developed Diablo in the first place -- he probably doesn't have to worry about that. However, it would indeed be a good idea to ensure that Torchlight II is polished as possible when it arrives, particularly if it will be arriving in roughly the same time frame.

"Be patient. Our total development time on this game is going to be about two years, which is not unreasonably long for this type of game," Schaefer said. "We're going as fast as we can. It'll be worth the wait, it'll totally be worth the wait. In the long run, people will be happy we took this extra time."

Still no official launch date yet, but keep an eye out for Torchlight II in the summer.

I had a chance to play the latest build of Torchlight 2 at PAX East, and in many ways I’m more excited about the $20 downloadable title than I am Diablo 3. Torchlight 2 won’t require an always-on Internet connection to play, and will offer LAN support. Torchlight 2 will be easy to mod, and the post-release content should keep the game fresh for years.

At least with Torchlight, we have a chance of it comming to consoles.

Two days after Borderlands!  And 19 days from XCom.  Ouch.
