What to buy?

I have had my head in the sand apparently for some time, being that I just stumbled on the Destiny franchise.  Looks like a game I would like and I found a copy for $38.00.  This is the standard version but reading various websites about the game they make it seem like the DLC is necessary.   How much is the DLC or a season pass?  Am I better off getting the version of the game that comes with the season pass?

Thanks!

You can easily get by with the base game as that should keep you busy for a while - and give you an idea if you actually like the game. You can get the expansion pass for $35 and it includes the first two DLC offerings. The first DLC just came out last week and it costs $20 without the pass

I did not buy the expansion pass, and even though the pass will save you $5 if you intend to buy both, I prefer to know what I'm getting before I commit.

Also just to clarify, I am talking about Destiny 2.

I checked this as well.  Get the game for $38 and go thru the story to evaluate and level up.  Not sure if you need DLC 1 for current crucible.  If you like the game then get either the first DLC ($20) (if still available to buy) or the pass for $35.
