What Profession / Race are you picking for GW2?
I've been looking through the professions / races and am at a loss as to what I want to start with. I'm most likely going to start with plain old boring Human as my race. I'm really lost as to what profession I want to start with, and that's so key to enjoying the game. In SWToR I really really liked my Vanguard Trooper. That class just clicked with me and I understood how to play it. It was a combination of Melee and Ranged and a classes I focused heavily on in PvP.
So what's everyone planning on starting with?
Clueless.....though I do tend to lean towards ranged capabilities.
I played as a Human elementalist and then a Sylvari elementalist in the betas. It's a realy nice ranged profession with a ton of options for abilities. The four different attunements plus the different abilites with whatever weapon type/combo you choose really makes the class super versatile. I was playing mostly as a fire elementalist with a staff because it gave me some cool AOE attacks that were really good in WvW.
I really enjoyed being a human actually. The starting area was pretty cool. But the Syvari starting areas are amazing. I may end up having characters from both races so I can play out the stories I started during the betas.
Hmmm, interesting. I was actually thinking of a magic user leaning towards an elementalist style.....w/o even knowing it was an available class. Of course that's also what I'm doing at the moment in Diablo3, so we'll see. I've tend to have a preference toward ice spells...I like the slowing capability that buys me a little more time.
Even after all the betas and stress tests, trying out various race/class combos, I'm still not 100% sure what I'll be playing for a main at launch. I plan on rolling a Sylvari Thief, Human Ranger and Norn Warrior, but Mesmer and Elementalist were fun too... heh. I do know that Necro, Guardian and Engineer don't interest me in the slightest.
Can you change professions? Or are you locked into a choice from the start?
I was looking at the Warrior class and that looks to have a mix of range and melee. Something similar to the class I ran in SWToR. Am I right about that or am I just reading that wrong?
Choosing a profession is the same as choosing a class in other mmos. You're locked to it. However every single class has a mix of ranged and melee. Some more so then others, but you wont be tied to just melee with any class.
You can't change professions, no. You'd have to reroll.
I think every class has a mix of range and melee, actually. Even a caster class like Elementalist can use daggers which have a much shorter range on their spells. Rangers can use swords/daggers/greatswords and melee it up, the Thief can use pistols and shortbows very effectively. Warrior can use all weapons and kicks just as much ass with a rifle as they do with melee weapons. That's what's so great about this game and it's weapon swapping. Allows you to plan for different scenarios. Getting kited as a melee, swap instantly to a ranged weapon. Some weapons do great single-target damage and others are meant for AoE.
I've been looking at a few builds and I see that. I'm thinking of going with the warrior and spec like this:

I typically always played a melee healer hybrid main in these games (friar in daoc, shaman in wow, DoK in Warhammer, etc.). Usually after becoming bored of having turned into a healer I'd roll a rogue type to play around with. Now they have become my favorite archtype to play in rpgs. One thing I always said though after DaoC and Warhammer was that if I ever were to play another RvR (WvW) game, I'd make sure I played a ranged class. I was always bored standing around as a melee during keep seiges. Yet, the very first thing I rolled in the beta was a Thief. So it seems that once again I'll be going against my better judgement, and will be rolling a Sylvari Thief. I just have so much fun playing melee classes that I can't help myself. I also tried out a Warrior and had a good time with that too. I love using dual maces in rpgs, and the warrior was the only class to let me do that.
I hated my Thief in WvW until I started using the shortbow in my second weapon slot. Does great AoE damage at range. I like to run dagger/dagger and shortbow.
Thanks, that's good to know. I'd planned on trying out the shortbow after release as my secondary weaponset.
I asked a friend who has played both games which GW2 profession was closest to the Vanguard Trooper and he said "it would have to be engineer." So, you could give that a shot, although every profession is capable of both close quarter and ranged combat.
The human starting area is my favorite. But know this: As soon as you have access to your race's city (15-20 minutes into the game) you can access the asura gate that takes you to Lion's Arch where the other gates are. So you could play for a few hours in the human areas then zip to the sylvari ones. There's always a few easy skill points outside each city, and this is a quick way to unlock some skills.
Awe... I like the engineer. :) The flamethrower is a lot of fun, though every slightly less so since they removed the Backdraft skill. During the stress test this week I took my engineer to WvW and I rained grenades on players from the Crystal Desert server as they tried to take our castle from us. The engineer makes a great team healer too. But, FLAMETHROWER!!!
Guys, don't forget you have five character slots so you can alternate between professions. Also, in the Hero panel under PVP is an option to "Enter the Mists." In this staging area for the PVP arenas all of your skills are unlocked (even the elites) and you can experiment.
Not sure yet, I like playing shit that others don't, so i may play Char Necro for one slot, and then maybe human ranger for a more normal slot. I don't know much more of the classes or races, so, i'll just take it as I go.
Here's a good guide on Weapons and Armor stats.
I'm going Nor / Guardian :)
First he was writing Nord. Now he's writing Nor. Dude, it's Norn.
I apologize for him. :)
I usually always start out with a warrior, then get an elementalist.

I'm going Norn Guardian as well, or Human Mesmer.
I really liked Engineer in beta though it definitely had a longer learning curve than other classes. Was hard to puta finger on any other MMo with a class like it which intrigues me. Hated Guardian. Really liked their and actually really liked Necro. Really torn myself and I have played them all through at least the first 5 or so levels plus all in max level PvP.
Guardian also looks good. but I'll stick to warrior just to play something familiar.
I am going to be running a Necro or Mesmer, not sure which at the moment.
Now if we can just get you on the damn mumble server!
I decided to go with a Sylvari Mesmer.
I'm a Sylvari Mesmer! Let's be friends!
Nice!!
