Go with the Pros!

When the 2o2p alpha pro team was announced, I knew I wanted to support these guys. To me, pro gaming in general is another good way of providing talented people with the means to make money and hopefully one day, a living. So when you even know the guys, it's a no brainer.

After seeing the ad for Halo2 lessons on the 2o2p forum, I decided to take action: I went to Paypal and paid $20. Why $20? Well, I knew F1r3 and I wanted him as my instructor. Plus $15 seemed kinda cheap for a donation. We then exchanged PMs, a day and a time were set. I prepared an overview of how I played (that was fairly short, started with an "I" and ended with "suck"), what I wanted to cover, etc.

Then the Big Day came. I was excited like a little kid waiting in line for that big attraction in the park. The only difference is that I was the attraction this time around. We met on Midship and F1r3 quickly asked a few more questions about what I wanted and what I expected out of the lesson. As my expectations were fairly generic, after a few answers to his questions, we started shooting around, him showing me moves and explaining combos, doing some jumps, changing maps, and then more. We also payed some 2 on 2 together so he could see me in action. We then did more moves and discussion, this time about sniping and how to improve it. The session ended way too soon for the simple reason that time flew by so fast!

I can't tell you how much fun this was: being able to speak one-on-one with someone as knowledgeable as F1r3 about Halo2 is priceless. Discussing strategies, personal shortcomings (ahem), vantage points locations, grenade tactics, game flow... You name it, he knows it.

I would like to end this little recap with some advice for the future students:

- think long and hard about what it is you want to achieve; the more thought you put into this, the more you'll get out of the lesson.
- prepare a summary of that and PM it to the instructor; include maps, weapons, gametypes, etc.
- if you have footage of you playing, ask someone to host it and have the instructor download it
- if there a are certain games that show your needs more than others, provide stats from bungie.net for these games
- depending on your level, propose a few one-on-one and/or two-on-two games so that the instructor can watch you play
- during the lesson, take notes; you can always research the internet later on if you need more info; believe me, one hour is short

Enjoy the privilege (I know I did), and off to pwning some timmies!

Remember, all donations are used to fund the team and their trips to MLG and other competitions. Thanks for the support.
