Top 10 FPS Weapons

First Person Shooters (FPS) and their weapons are legendary to fans of the genre. But which weapons are the best and which weapons have lasted since first introduced over a decade ago? Here is my list of the 10 best FPS weapons and the games they came from.

#10: Blood / Blood 2 – Voodoo Doll

blooddoll Who ever said dolls were for girls never saw the Voodoo Doll in action. Cripple your enemy, blind them, stab them and destroy them, this weapon was great fun and if there is ever a sequel to the Blood series this bad boy better make a come back. Barbie had nothing on this doll.

#9: Postal 2 – Anthrax filled rotting cow head

postal2cowhead
Postal 2, a game that was made for Jack Thompson to love, has a gruesome and twisted weapon with the cow head. Making your victims vomit blood made this weapon a more fun then anyone should have handling rotting meat. Certainly this is a weapon that made an impression on Gary Coleman, I hope it makes it into the movie.

#8: Unreal Tournament – Flak Cannon

UTFLAK
The first great multiplayer FPS game on the PC also introduced one of the best weapons ever to shred your friends with. Visceral gibing never had it so good when catching people in close quarters and destroying every one who was hit by it. More fun then any of the other weapons in the game for up close action, just remember to wash up before eating.

#7: Duke Nukem 3D - Shrink Ray

A game that introduced several great weapons to the genre has one of the most ingenious weapons for death match; a shrink ray that allows for some down home stomping. This was really the first weapon used in death match that was embarrassing to be killed by. Before pwnage there was Duke Nukem.

#6: Halo 2 – Covenant Energy Sword

Deadly fast and a weapon which people ran for and from in Halo 2 multiplayer game play. With one hit kills, who didn't want this bad boy. This sword was not for newbies, but required actual skill against players who could defend against it. And if a better player also had one you were re-spawning before you knew it.

#5: Quake – Rocket Launcher

quakerocket
Not the first rocket launcher in a game, but one of the best rocket launchers in the first true 3D FPS, which lead to an insane amount of late night rocket matches in multiplayer. Since it was introduced there have been many who wanted to clone the rocket launcher from Quake, but no one has come close.

#4: Doom – Shotgun

The Great Equalizer for any multiplayer match. With great range and damage, it created the need to have a shotgun in every FPS since Doom. Newbies could defeat better players with a well placed shot and skilled players could have a frag fest run that is unparalleled to any other weapon. The shotgun deserves to be on every great weapon list.

#3: Doom 2 – Double Barrel Shotgun / Super Shotgun

Doom gave us the shotgun and Doom 2 gave us the cannon that shredded enemies and friends alike. This powerful shotgun ate up ammo but laid waste like nothing before and was more fun then it should have been in multiplayer matches.

#2: Doom 2 – Chainsaw

What was a chainsaw doing in Hell? On Mars? Who the heck cares, there is nothing like running up and causing pure carnage. In single player it was fun, but in multiplayer it was incredible to chainsaw your friends to death. Cliffy B took notice and added a chainsaw to the main gun in Gears of War, it’s about time a new game gave us a weapon like this.

#1: Halo – Combat Evolved – Pistol

halo1pistol
While not playable online, this weapon was powerful and with its 2X scope you could snipe your buddies in death match from accross any map. Once this default weapon was given to players in a game that did not suck, it could be used to lay waste to your enemies. You could do head shots over and over with ease and there is not a better weapon for multiplayer and single player game play that is so rewarding. While it was reduced in usefulness in Halo 2, we hope this makes a come back in Halo 3.
