What Will It Take For You To Buy A PlayStation 3?

It's easy to write a PlayStation 3 hate article, everyone on the Net has posted at least ten in the last six to eight months. But, what would it take for you to buy a PlayStation 3, for real?

The reasons for not buying a PlayStation 3 usually land into three categories (or maybe a few more):

  • I hate Sony
  • It's too expensive
  • No games of interest

For those that hate Sony with passion... you're lost to us. The other two concerns can be nailed in due time, right?

Looking at some of the titles for the holiday season we see games like Warhawk, Stranglehold, NASCAR 08 along with your typical sports games. Assassin's Creed is going to be a big title this holiday along with GTA IV.

True enough, many of these games are also coming out on the Xbox 360. What about Metal Gear Solid 4? We're assuming, as of now, this is a PlayStation 3 exclusive title coming in Spring '08.

Are there any games you won't be able to live without? Or games you would rather play on a PlayStation 3 than Xbox 360?

Speaking from our demographic here at 2old2play.com asking a gamer if they're ready to buy a PS3 usually incites an argument because we're so very Xbox 360-centric (based on past media coverage with OXM and Bungie.net).

But, really, what would it take you, a highly populated Xbox 360 community, to buy into the Sony experience?

Barring silly ads and bad press, it's all about the games and the machine, right? Perhaps, it's all about the price?

What price would you pay for the Sony PlayStation 3? Microsoft has said, with history backing them up, the mass market price is around USD $199.99. Not even Nintendo has hit this price point yet, but they're eating alive the competition in terms of unit sales.

Assuming the PlayStation 3 won't see USD $199.99 for some years to come, at what point would you consider a PS3 purchase? Would you spend $399.99 on the console today or wait for more games to arrive?

It seems each month gamers consider the console a little more, but we're not sure how many commit and put down the green for the unit. As fall, in North America, draws closer we'll see more titles arrive for every console. As the trailers are presented and the games arrive, the PS3 should be more tempting each quarter but when will hardcore gamers and casual gamers decide to invest in the product?
