Shared on Wed, 07/26/2006 - 04:40It's not so hot today. Thankfully. Dublin has had 3 or 4 weeks of constant hot sunny weather. Very unusual. Normally we would get, perhaps, a week of good weather in one go and it wouldn't be as consistantly hot as it has been. I'm glad for the respite. I'm just not built for it. I'm a peely-wally Scotsman whose skin tone would be pale blue if it were not for the copious amount of freckles on my arms. Growing up just outside Glasgow I can tell you that we never had this kind of weather. We might have had 1 or 2 days of continuous sunshine that would have seemed hot to us but never the sort of weather I'm having now. Obviously, when I say "hot" I'm not referring to the lieks of the 50Deg heat some parts of California are getting recently but put it this way, Scotlands record temperature is 31.6C so I'm talking about days when it's mid 20's being hot. Here in Dublin it's been mid 20's for weeks. I'm going mental. I thought 45deg in Sudan for 6 weeks was torture but at least I had air-con there. What makes it worse is my 8-month old boy is teething and adding the heat means he is not having fun. he has not slept throught the night for 3-weeks now. 3:30am regular as clockwork he's up and crying. Some nights are worse than others. Sleep for mummy and daddy is a valuable but rare commodity. Last night, however, was much cooler and he was back to his usual trick of sleeping from 10pm to 6am. Bliss. (he went back over to 7:30am!!)
This cimate change thing is a rather worrying. I think about it in relation to work and I've a bit of research done on the subject but apparently I ws predicting it back when I was 15yrs old (Mothers have some memories, I tell ye). I've my finger on the pulse! Funny how I was going on about it back then yet it's only really been a hot topic in the last year or two. Why haven' the politicians been going on about it before now? Because they only care about 5-year plans that's why. Usually even shorter periods. Elections are all that matter. How can you plan to run a country or influence other countries when only working on 4 or 5 year work plans? Politics is the worst thing to ever happen to human civilisation because those people who want to be politicians are the wrong sort of people to be politicians. Yhey are in it mainly for self service and self promotion. If they weren't politicians they would probably be in the media or acting, which is why so many actors cross over. What we really need is a benevolant dictatorship or monarchy driven political system but human nature being as it is you would find it very hard to find a truely altruistic leader (I'd make a great high Emperor of Earth. Totally altruistic. honest). Even then people, the genreal populace, rarely see the big picture, rarely see beyond the self interest and immediate short term gain. They vote accordingly in a great herd-like monstosity. never thinking for themselves, believing all they read in newspapers and see on TV. Where'd this rant come from???
Must look on the bright side. It is a grey day. The air is cooler. I had a full nights sleep. I've another 70-years to live (I'm going to live to be at least 100 years old) so much could change. I am tall, dark and handsome with the body of a Greek God (I have it on time-share and he wants it back next Tuesday so better make the most of it now). My son could grow up and change the world, make his daddy proud, if it were possible to be prouder than I already am of the little tike!
Face your fears people. Smile at it and give it the finger, both fingers in fact. Tomorrow is ours to shape.
