Time to buy a new car

How exciting...yeah right.

So, my wife's 10 year old Honda is a miserable ride and is on it's way out.  We've made a deal.  Since she has a crap load of loans from grad school, I give her my car and I get a new ride.  Yea me.

Now I get to deal with salesmen, and trying to figure out how I am going to come up with a downpayment.  If anyone has any tips for dealing with these guys, like avoiding them altogether, let me know.

I think I've decided we are going to spend our newleywed years with a Wrangler.  We've got no kids.  We've been married a month.  We've got plenty of time to be practical, for now let's have some fun.  I am excited.  Everytime I see one on the road I get excited and want to just go to the dealership.  I am just scared as hell.  I'm not a homeowner and I haven't bought anything that big since my last car, five years ago.

When i bought my F150 i went to dealers. I got so annoyed with them lieing flat out to me about stuff and double speaking. I turned around and ordered the truck i want custom built from fords online ordering center. You get the vehicle for cost plus 500 bucks. not a bad deal. Now if only gas weren't so damn expensive maybe I could drive it!

just go to the dealers for a test ride. Then do the dirty work online. A lot of car dealers have on line sales reps that do sales via the internet. go to edmunds.com or some other car site, get the invoice pricing on the car you want, then make they offer. If they don't like or fart around, it is their loss.

Make them compete. If your getting an American car (I don't buy american cars often so its more difficult) the best thing to do is talk to as many dealers as you can find around your area. They will all spin a slightly different story and roll different prices towards you. Act confident like you know your shit (even if you don't). Walk in like you own the place, if you talk to many dealers you can fight them against each other "Well, Store B told me I can get this for 1300 less then you have, here is there number if you want to call..." (yes, show them you've bene there). Be ready to put on some miles, because you'll probably keep getting counter offers but they tell you "come on in" to check out the deal. Basically they want you in that place so they can hound you and give you half of what you think they will and then you will be so tired of driving you settle. DON'T BE THAT GUY. If you have to get up and walk away, do it. They will usually try to get you to sit back down. If you make yourself at home they will try to eat you alive. Remember the price they're talking may not be the final price (after they mention stuff that doesn't come with the model you drove, extra warranties, all hidden costs). You want to know "WHAT PRICE WILL I WALK OUT WITH" and "I want the price that I have to go to the bank and get the certified check for" Next, don't buy ANY extended agreements or "gold" "silver" agreements. That's a bunch of bullshit. They will tell you the agreement puts your warrenty to something like "75k miles, or 7 years" or whatever it is. Know your rights, you can buy this at any time during the life of the manufacturers warrenty, not on day one. Secondly, I believe that the extended warrenty starts after the first 90 days of your initial warrenty - so you lose a few months of that "additional" warrenty you bought. Hold out, if the car is getting iffy in a few years, you can buy that extended crap later (or just get a cheap mechanic). Lastly, its your money. Don't try to let them talk you into things. Find out online what the make, model, and features are that you want. Use some online places to get quotes, and don't let anyone put you above them. If they do, say "sorry, I can do better" and get up and leave. Maybe you cannot - let them stir a bit - and leave your number with them. Ok, that should start you :) CodeMonkey

Thanks folks. I spent some time in the Chromehounds lobby chatting with folks who had read my entry. Going to the bank tomorrow to see how easy it is to get a loan, and what sort of rates they give me. Thanks again, everyone has given some great tips. I'll post pics when/if I get a new ride. Wham
