I think its time to move

So many of you know the saga of my car, how it was stolen, and how I finally got it back. So yesterday I decided that with the left over cash from the insurance settlement I would buy scooter instead of a new car. For one, I work from home so there is no real need to buy a car for the city when all I use it for is going out, banking, or eating. Second, its the summer so I really don't have to worry to much about the weather in a hot ass city like Chicago. Lastly, I don't have a lot of money as of now so buying a 1,000 scooter over a car seems like a great way to fend off any potential new creditors.

Well, today I get a call from the people below me about a break in. Turns out the criminal element was only using my car theft to test the waters of our security and now they have entered the inner sanctum of our buildings units. They stole TVs, DVD, Players, Appliances, and yes a couch. So how well do you think a 180 pound scooter would fair? Yep that's what I thought. Its not so much the theft that we worry about either. Stuff can get replaced even if it does suck to feel violated by that. The main problem is what you do if you happen to come home while this is happening. In the old days a thief would just run off into the night with what ever they could carry. Now-a-days it usually ends up with someone being injured or worse yet killed. And over what? A television? Maybe its time to move.

You can always move to the north side... not much thieving going on around here ;) I'm actually leaning towards the vigilante side though. You know who they are, right?

Don't listen to DarthClem, the cannibals are only up in the north woods. Move, get out. Do you really want to spend your time worrying if your place is being broke into? Two wheeled vehicles are awesome and cheap to maintain. I just got the bill for my motorcycle insurance. $80 for full 12 month coverage and a $188 deductible. 50mpg. It pretty much pays for itself. I am sure a scooter is much cheaper and much better gas mileage. The only thing you need to worry about is other people. They will cut you off more than if you had a car. Just be prepared at all times to make quick maneuvers. Personally, for $1000, I'd get an older motorcycle. That way you can have saddlebags to carry a decent amount of groceries. Heck, my ds came home in the saddlebags :) This will require a motorcycle license and maybe a driving test. Like most driving tests, for the most part, it is common sense and pretty easy. If you do go this route I highly recommend taking the state's course though.

Somehow I doubt you are the gun toting kind of guy. Even if you were, what are the chances you'd be packing, had the drop on the perps, had a pair and could shoot them like the dogs they are, avoided getting shot yourself and were able to stay out of jail? Guns only protect you in dreams. Hopefully you'll be able to find a reasonable way to solve your problem. Every situation is different. Good luck.

I agree with SirPoonga about getting an older bike aka "rat bike" just you can get over 25mph but still get 40+ mpg and it is probably heavier than a scooter so harder for a crook to carry away. Either way would get a disc lock and a cable to secure it.

d0od, motorcycles have triple tree locks. Most bikes you turn the handlebars all the way to the left and you can lock them in place. Granted, this doesn't stop someone from stealing it. But it does make it much more difficult to steal since you can't steer them until you hack out the lock. Kinda like the club for cars, it keeps the honest people honest.

@ Sirpoonga. I have 3 motorcycles and I would not leave any of them outside w/ just the triple tree lock for security. :) Call me paranoid. I use the disk lock to secure the cable thru the rear wheel and something immobile and lock it to the rear sprocket. I just do this @ night if I have to leave the bike in a not so secure area.

Man, what is the market like? Can you get some equity of that place? What would think your sell time is? What is the market like elsewhere? Where would you move to? What about the world's best tacos right up the street? Damn, tough decisions.

Yes its time to either get out.....or start carrying. Dunno how you feel about guns or what the concealed weapon laws are where you're at... But it may just call for it.

You need to do one of two things. A) Move or B) invest in a a security system complete with cameras and a monitoring service. But i think at this point, i would have just moved. Even if you're in a lease, there's ample reason to break the lease if the landlords can't step up the security in the building.

If you came home and saw a giant floating hand writing "GET OUT" on your living room wall, would that be enough? :)

Move while you still can, once an area is tagged as being easy to rob nothing you own is safe. Jaggoffs will steal anything.

You should head up here to Wisconsin, then all you have to worry about is 8 months of winter. Oh, and cannibals.

Either Move or get a pair a Dobermans to watch your back. Not worth getting shot over a 360. Especially since itll prolly give you the ring of death in a couple of months anyways.
