Sunday nights escapade

Got a call from the neighbors on Sunday night, their emu broke loose from its pen and they wanted help corraling it. And I was like...Nah. A little back story here.
Couple months back, an emu broke loose from a ranch down the road and was running down the state highway. Some good samaritan called the animal control, based out of a suburban area, they come out and try catching this 5 ft tall bird (most everyone has seen an emu at the zoo right? Looks kinda like an ostrich). After chasing this bird several miles down the road, at speeds surpassing 35 mph, they get it into the neighbors back pasture. Actually, it lead them there.

Now, I don't know what is funnier to watch, folks that are used to catching stray cats and dogs try to corral an ostrich; or watching local law enforcement, comprised entirely of city folk, no offense, trying to clear a few stray cattle off the road (seen it , hilarious).  Anyway, these folks had to park and climb through a fence to get into the pasture, so now they're on foot trying to catch this thing. The neighbors come out w/ their lasso and try roping it, to no avail. One of the officers tries grabbing the bird, till it starts kicking. Not exactly the way I would have tried it, a misplaced kick can kill you. They ended up catching it when it tripped on a fence and went down.

The officers couldn't put it in the truck because it was to big. The neighbors said they would take care of it and keep it if no owners stepped forward. Well, the owners stepped forward a few days later and came to collect their property. But the neighbors were so taken by the bird they bought another one.

Hopefully you can understand my trepidation, that entire event ran through my head when I got the call. Went so much smoother than expected though, apparently it helps if the bird hasn't been chased five miles down the road by a truck b4 trying to catch it. Who knew?
