Wierd Trends

Seriously, why won't some of these wierd trends just die?

MSNBC as well as other news organizations today are reporting that Christina Aguilera posed nekkid and preggo for this month's Marie Claire.

We can all thank Demi Moore for Christina's cover.... as well as Britney's cover.... and Heidi Klum's... and every other pregnant celebrity in the last 15 years. Remember this?

I have a baby at home, was there for the birth, and while the process is beautiful and miraculous and kind of gross all at the same time, I'm proud to admit that I'm a nobody. And my wife is a nobody. Well, if she asks, I'll tell her that she's a somebody to me. So why is it that naked and pregnant are so much more beatiful and miraculous when it's the star of Ghost or a former Mickey Mouse Clubber or a used-to-be-jailbait-but-then-married-a-redneck-so-now-just-a-has-been-whore. And why is it that the appeal of this li'l fad is as strong in 2007 as it was in the early 90's?

Eventually, with some luck, it will die. Like other stupid fads from the last 20 years. Remember......

Also from 1991. When Kriss Kross popularized wearing clothes backwards? Wow, I remember the three or four days when that fad was huge!

Rave culture. I shudder to think that I was actually into this stupid fad in the late 90's when I was in college and smoking lots of marijuana. Although, I say with some certainty that I never looked like the above walking birth defect.

"______________On Board" signs. Remember these from the 80's? Some company created a parody of the "Baby on Board" sign and all of a sudden, every unoriginal asshole on the road had a yellow sign in their back window advertising "Giants Fan On Board", "Nagging Wife on Board", or "Dumb Trend Follower On Board."

Bluetooth in public. Well, technically, it hasn't completely died yet, but more people have become self-aware of their high douchebag ratings and I don't hear as many people near me in supermarkets talking loudly on their Bluetooth. However, the next generation is a bunch of text-messaging teenagers who bump into you because they don't watch where they're going as they "TXT" their friends.

And last, but certainly not least:

I will admit I owned a Mighty Mighty Bosstones record at one point. But I never really got it. And for a couple years, this style of music was a silly little lifestyle for a bunch of silly little high school and college kids, wearing silly clothing like plaid zoot suits and silly haircuts like shaved heads with mullet chops, and completely with a silly little style of dancing.

There have been other God-awful fads out there. What else am I forgetting?

I don’t want to burst you're little bubble on the whole Ska thing. It is a style of music that has been around since the 50’s and still vibrant today. Hugely influential in Jamaican music scene. Bob Marley got his start in the genre. You may want to do a little research into things before writing silly little blogs about them.

@Aonon: That's a good point, and I re-read through the blog and see how it can be interpreted. I have no issue with the musical genre - going back to MMB, I've seen them multiple times and they always put on a good show. More specifically I'm referring to the 2 years or so where high school kids associated some really strange styles with the genre.

Its funny how for the last 20 years or so kids from about 10 to 18 go through the same fads. The bands change but the styles remain the same.
