Are you an accountant? Or at least smarter than me?

I am getting a jump start on my family's taxes while I wait for the last couple deduction paperwork to come in. I have a quick question though and I am hoping one of the 3 people who reads my blog can help.

When would I want to file "head of household" as opposed to married? My wife and I have one kid, we both work, and I earn about 60% more than she does. We typically file a joint return but now that we have the kid, I wonder about the head of household thing.

If anybody has an idea let me know. The last thing I want is an IRS audit because I fuck something up.

I hate to say it, but I'm an accountant....degree and all....I don't even do my own taxes....but then again, I am a contract accountant....sorry...but I will ask my Tax person....aka my wife.

Head of household is for those that wouldn't select "Married Filing Jointly" as you would (two incomes). The kids don't really affect the situation. If your wife didn't work then you would file HoH. Enjoy, NG

NormalGuy, you rule. That's what I thought (although I noticed I'd earn a hell of a lot more as head of household!).
