I haven't played many MMOs, but I have played some. They never caught my attention. I got into the DCUO beta on the PC and PS3. I liked it but it was definitely a beta. Buggy buggy buggy. I got the release for PS3. Not as buggy but still some issues. However, the devs are doing a really good job at posting patches and content. The biggest issue with the game right now is the voice chat sucks. We have been using xbox chat because of that.
I am liking this MMO very much. It works really wel on the console. I like how the combat system uses combos - fits a console perfectly. Combos regen your power. Power is used for supoer powers.
Recently they fixed how mental controllers work. In my group DeltaT is a fire tank, one bad daddy is a mental controller, and I am a sorcery healer. This is a great combo. The tank does the damage/aggro, the controller is power regen, and I am the medic. However, there was an issue with this. The mental controller aggroed everything. In the last patch they fixed this. We can now play our roles as they were intended.
It is interesting how you learn the best team dynamics. Our usual battle consists of Detla aggroing one good guys (we are villains). I will through up a Soul Well near him shich lowers damage and slowly heals - perfect tool for a tank. OBD will do his controller spells that help drain enemy life quicker. I then cast Circle of Protection which is a large circle that heals any allies in it. I can usually encompass the tank and controller in it. From there I do combos and watch everyone's health bars to see who needs most attention.
That sounds really geeky, doesn't it. Like the South Park WoW episode. Like I siad, I never really got into MMOs, but this one works for me.
However, at $15/month it is too much to keep going. that money could be used towards other games. I think they are going to realize that at some point. Console gamers are different than PC gamers. Console gamers like to play a bunch of games. I know PC gamers that only play WoW and a couple of gmaes.
Because of DCUO I haven't touched COD Black Ops since the patch came out. I don't know how the ak74u has been affected.
The Killzone 3 beta came out last night. I played acouple of bot matches as multiplayer was hosed. It is a big improvement over kz2. I like kz2 except for the ranking system. They took COD's ranking system and make it even more unbalanced. You started out as a grunt with little toys. So going up against someone who has unlocked everything you were at a huge disadvantage. Some people will tell you the game was balanced and team work is how you get around that problem. Well, that can only get you so far. While you do have to play as a team, you can only put your corsshairs on one person at a time. So in the little one on one battles that occur through out the match you are at a huge disadvantage. KZ3 has fixed that. You can now pick any class to start with. So if your team needs a medic you can now switch to that class, you don't have to unlock it.
The controls are much better also. They felt really natural. The game pace is somewhere between rainbow six and cod. It doesn't take a ton of bullets to take someone down but it does take more than 2. I think that is a good balance between something like COD and Halo. COD you die pretty much instantly. Hell, you can die before you even throw a grenade even though you hit the grenade button before the other person started shooting. In Halo you can go thorugh more than one clip to kill someone.
I like how the tactician is used to take over spawn points. However, I could see spawn locks occuring for certain game types which kz2 has issues with on certain maps. Mortars are cool. You get a beacon you have to throw. Where it lands is where the mortar strike happens. I haven't been able to try the jetpacks yet, are they in the beta?
KZ3 has copied a bit of COD - like all games these days. It now has a buggy party system and points that pop up when you kill someone. Can't anyone be original. At least the warfare game type is orignal. I am surprised no 360 game has copied that idea yet. It's agreat way to play an FPS.
Outside of gaming I am working on my motorcycle LEDs now that it is winter and cold cold cold outside. I am doing a complete redesign over what I started in spring. i found much better LEDs and a cool microprocessor that has built in ethernet and microsd. I will hook up a wifi bridge to it and control it with my ipod.
