Portal 2 and other stuff

 Portal 2 on the mind

Finally…a Game of the Year candidate!!! This year has already seen a good deal of very good games come out, but it wasn’t until last Tuesday that we finally got our first “GREAT” game. Portal 2 is nothing short of amazing. The game play is as refined as any game on the market, the visual are top notch and the story is compelling (even better if you played the 1st one). What really makes this game as memorable as it is are the characters, both of which are AI. Stephen Merchant and Ellen McLain are money as Wheatley and GlaDOS. The dialog is some of the funniest I have seen in a game. One part in particular comes to mind; Wheatley is guiding your character (Chell) through an area that is dark and needs to turn on his flashlight…

Wheatley: [Wheatley leads Chell through a dark area of the facility] Ah, brilliant! You made it through! Well done. Okay, follow me. We've still got work to do. At least she can't touch us back here.
[lights in the room start to go off one by one]
Wheatley: What's that thing? Um... Hmm. Okay.
[it is now pitch black]
Wheatley: Okay, uh... Don't move. Okay, all right. So, I've got an idea, but it is bloody dangerous. Here we go.
[he turns his flashlight on]
Wheatley: AAAAH!
[looks around]
Wheatley: Oh, for God's sake... They told me that if I ever turned this flashlight on, I would die! They told me that about everything! I don't even know why they bother giving me this stuff if they didn't want me to use it; it's pointless! Mad!

There are examples of this throughout the entire game. I would definitely suggest turning on the subtitles to makes sure you catch these. They are worth the price of the game. One more…

GLaDOS: Most people emerge from suspension terribly undernourished. I want to congratulate you on beating the odds and somehow managing to put on a few pounds

I actually can’t stop thinking about Portal 2. Everywhere I go I think of ways I could use the Portal gun to make my life much easier. Annoying lady talking on the phone…() shoots portal into fountain….() shoots portal under annoying lady. A portal gun could solve so many problems. “We have a leak!” () Shoots portal outside…() shoots portal under leak. Travel is obvious, but could you imagine moving…()shoots portal at living room wall…() shoots portal in living room of new home. Of all the things we see in gaming, this is the one I want most. All other items pale in comparison.

Dungeon crawling at its finest

Besides the brilliance of Portal 2 I have been occupying my time with Torchlight. A wildly addicting dungeon crawler in the spirit of Diablo. There is a story, but no one really cares about the story….it all about the loot! When you start to play and explore the dungeon the one thing you want to find is the next great weapon or armor. This really doesn’t kick n until after level 20 when the drops become significantly more rewarding (epic and unique weapons with awesome effects). This is easily one of the best games for download on the marketplace.

Would someone please tell DICE and EA to shut up about Battlefield 3

Is anyone getting a little annoyed by the shear volume of news and information coming out of the Battlefield 3 hype machine? I know DICE and EA are doing everything in their power to knock off Call of Duty as the top FPS franchise, but enough is enough. It will look great, feature a good story and have a deep multiplayer, but overall how much different is it going to be compared to the other 50 FPS games that have came out in the last year? You shoot, kill people, get XP, level up, upgrade your load outs and repeat. Same game just a different skin. It’s just a shame that games like this (which over saturate the market) get so much press. They are tiresome and repetitive. IF the game is successful, will it be because of the game itself or the advertising?

Funny you mention that about EA and Dice, as I was thinking the same thing about everyone raving how great Portal 2 is....Just messin' with ya. You know you right about the reskinning and such, but that's what dominates in this market and that's what the public demands... Look at sales numbers, they speak for themselves and you can't deny that. I do play all genre's of games but find myself gravitating to the FPS's. Not because I am a diehard fan, but for the social aspect's. You can typically get a large group of friends into a match and have a good time while shooting the shit. I am a social gamer and enjoy the conversations and encounters I have online and if it takes me picking up the new CoD or Battlefield game to do so, then so be it. I mean after all isn't that why I pay $50 a year? So I can enjoy it the way I want? So please don't pigeon hole us FPS players, as all of us are not as bad as you seem to think. For 2 days now it seems you've questioned the gaming habits or integrity of others just because they didn't coincide with yours. You can try to compare apples to oranges all day, but don't question the habit or choices of game a person like's to play just because you find them unfulfilling or unsatisfying. We are all gamers regardless of whether you can cope with that or not.

I guess those two commentaries would be taken that way back to back...my apologies if you feel I insulted you as a gamer. It was not the intent and my opinions are more on the genre not giving the gamer more then the gamers themselves. I enjoy the FPS genre, hell I played only Halo 3 for almost a year strait. I buy every major release and become fully immersed in that multiplayer; leveling my character, learning the maps, and doing what I can to be successful at that game. My thoughts are more on the genre itself...it seems to be the market in gaming. Yes they always sell well and for the most part very polished, but its been since 2007 that I have actually been wowed by the genre. COD4 did so much for FPS games and gaming in general...because it was amazing. They took the genre and made it addictive by adding the progressive leveling system and creating a game with a very low learning curve. The problem is that very little has happen in the genre since then. They get upgraded graphics and may add in there own "twist", but they lack very little innovation or "WOW" factor. I want to be WOW again by the genre, but what games is going to do it? Bulletstorm added some great elements to the FPS, but it lacked competitive multiplayer. Imagine a TDM game that could be won by how you killed people more so then how many you killed...it was a phenomenal concept. Brink give me hope with their large co-op side of gaming, completely customizable characters, and smart move system, but how will it actually play out. These are what I want for the genre...compelling additions that change how the game is played or improve it so other companies strive to compete with it. Everyone wants to copy COD's formula to compete with it, why not go a different route to compete with COD and innovate the genre the way Halo did in 2003 or COD 4 did in 2007. They may not have reinvented the genre, but the changed enough to give the gamer something new and compelling. I apologize for my douchebaggery, I love social gaming and you should enjoy whatever makes you happy in gaming...it's your free time.

You and I sound like we are cut from the same cloth my friend. I too feel the same way you do with the FPS genre. It's stale and lacks originality. I sincerely feel Brink is going to help break the mold on the FPS genre And bring a new experience to the table. Hope I get to run in a squad with you. P.S. I've got thick skin man and was speaking generally. No harm, no foul.

I can agree pretty wholeheartedly with your last two blogs. Most games are rehashed versions of the previous ones which has me lately turning to Steam and indie games. I love Portal also, but to me it isn't a $50 game. It has witty commentary and some fun game play but for the money an FPS gives those players months of fun which Portal won't (at least for me). Oh well, nothing groundbreaking coming this year that I can see. I know its a sad state when I am considering buying Lego Pirates of the Caribbean.
