In today's world technology is changing the way we understand and view the world around us.

Paradigms shift on a daily basis as new technologies emerge to bring us closer to the time in which man and machine unite as one species. This time will herald a creation of a synthetic evolutionary jump, in which all things as we know them will change... and then the question will arise...

Can we live forever?

Nova: ScienceNow explores the interesting possibilities of this evolutionary acceleration in this episode, for your consumption. (also available on Netflix)

It would be awesome... but raises lots of problems too. - What about over-population? We have trouble with that NOW, and we don't live that long at all! - What about brain function? Even if the body could be endlessly repaired, could the mind? Would dementia still settle in? - What about memory? Does the human brain have some limit to it's capacity? Or would just old brain cells die off and new ones take their place? And if that is the case, would that mean that everyone has a sort of "rolling" memory? Where they only remember the last 100 years or so? - What about cost? Would it be free for everyone, or would only the rich be able to afford it? That would create a new ruling class of immortals - scary to think about! But I'm all for it. Sign me up :)

Most of these questions are addressed in this Nova special. Yes these are very real problems to think about as the technology to successfully do this becomes more of a reality. You must also ask yourself, does everyone WANT to live forever. Imagine a day and time in which death is elective and nearly un-natural. These days are on the horizon. How will your children embrace the future to come? You may not live forever, but your offspring has a very good chance at it...

it brings to mind the old movies "Logan's Run", and "ZARDOZ". Zardoz especially, with the "ruling class of immortals". Sir Sean Connery's greatest movie ever...lol.
