"When it came to the casting of Rue, Thresh, and Cinna, many audience members did not understand why there were black actors playing those parts." In the Hunger Games book, some of the characters were briefly described as having dark skin and dark eyes, but not necessarily black. At least a number of readers didn't picture them that way.
However, when they watched the film and realized that black actors were cast in those parts, it damn near ruined the movie for a handful of them. One girl tweeted "why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie." But it doesn't stop there:
My favorite part of the article, though: Update: As of 7:00 PM, it looks like the vast majority of these insightful folks have either shut down their Twitter accounts or made them private. Au revoir.
I could get on a soapbox and make statements of how disgraceful the comments are but I think they speak for themselves. Funny thing is, though, when I read the tweets it's all in the same voices that I hear when playing on Xbox live.

I seriously don't understand these people. It never even occured to me to question the casting and actually thought it was pretty good. Just stupid, ignorant people.

It says right in the book that Rue is 'Brown Skined" ..... wtf do those people think that means? I know there are many different shades of Brown/Black skin but overall I wouldn't be expecting that role to be played by a white person if it's staying true to the book.
People are stupid.

You didn't see people freak out when Nick Fury went from an old white guy to Samuel L. Jackson, or for that matter when Billie Dee Williams played Harvey Dent in Batman, but touch Hunger Games and they get all butt hurt. Wow!!!

@TLBosss: Holy crap I didn't even think about that but you're right. Maybe it's a different demographic? Comic book readers are either less racist or less vocal about their racism?
I do remember when GTA: San Andreas was released, a very small handful of gamers were pissed when the main character was black. If Twitter was around then, maybe we would have heard more about it?
@Tank: I work in an area of recruiting/employment law, where social media in recruiting is now a very hot topic. MANY people are missing out on jobs because of the dumb shit they put online. Apparently these kids never got the memo.....

Another thing I noticed.... I was alwasy taught not to use my real name out there electronically starting back in BBS days and that continued thru when the internet came open to the public and i hopped on with my 56k modem.
All these morons are using their full real names.... are you really that stupid? Really !?!?! O_o
