Shared on Thu, 05/24/2012 - 13:07As I was discussing Zombie Apocalypse survival techniques with a buddy of mine. It was a discussion based on what geographical locations in the US provide for the best survival probiblities. Some quite suddenly cropped up in my thinking. Im sure there is an aswer to my question out there somewhere, but I dont have it yet.
Zombies thaat rise from the grave and attack are easily understood and it makes sense that they can move and remain reanimated. My problem is the "infected" zombies i.e. Resident Evil, 28 Days Later and Zombie Land. All of these zombies are no the result of some occult ritual to bring the dead back to life but the result of some infection. Obiously they have the need to feed on human flesh to survive. At first the food supply would be abundant and they would have no difficulties in fulfilling thier need for flesh. Now being infected and zombie like would then seem to present a problem for said monsters. Since they are still technically human wouldnt they still require fuel for thier bodies? Regaurdless of whatever infected them they wold still need water and substinance to survive. In the movies and games they always appear to just be milling around waiting for some hapless fool to wander into thier midst.
So to me it seems that surviving an outbreak would only consist of waiting for thier bodies to break down and the zombies to die off. It would never be an on going thing. Considering most of the infected seem pretty worse for wear I dont think it would take all that long for the plauge to be over. Now Im not a huge zombie fanatic or anything so Im sure some of you that are can provide me with an answer to my zombie problem!

A couple of things:
Supernatural Zombies - Rising from the grave is more difficult than most movies make it. In addition to having to get out of a locked casket, there is a sealed burial vault made of concrete or fibergalss then after getting through that with just their hands, the zombie has to claw through 3 to 4 feet of compacted soil before reaching the surface.
Super rabies / infected - bigger problem. Urban areas would be death traps. The infection rate would be almost exponential and would overrun non infected in a matter of days. Also, the majority of city people don't have stored supplies or a survival mindset.. Suburban is a little better, but not by much.
Out here in the boonies, we have limited access by road with natural choke points that lend themselves to closing roads if necessary. Most of us keep full pantries and know survival skills like hunting, fishing and canning. We grow food. We raise food. Most of us know how to ride horses. We're not scared of guns and usually have one or two lying around. We know how to reload. Some of us bow hunt. We have wood stoves and fireplaces. Most city zombies won't make the hike out to sticks and those that do are going to meet a bunch of rednecks with guns, 4x4's and willingness to use them.
The biggest problem as stated in "The Walking Dead", We're all infected.
The best plan - Make some body armor from old tires, learn to speak with an Austrailian accent, make sure all the hot girls wear clothes that are one size too small and completly inaprropriate, drive vehicles with giant tires and machine guns bolted to them. Get automatic weapons and enjoy the appocalypse!

I agree with you 100% johnny. Surviving the zombie apocalypse shouldn't take longer then a month or two depending on how fast it takes the virus to turn its victom. But then again zombies are 100% fictional so I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about logic. Like the other fella said: "Surround yourself with chicks in clothing thats too small". Of course thats the scenerio where we are to distracted to notice the zombies comning to kill us. lol
