I share your frustration, but the reality is that games are released with bugs nowadays, because they want to get the $$$ ASAP and they can always patch it.  The Xbox One version of the game is a mess right now, but hopefully with the forthcoming Patch 1.4 they will get it to work like the PC version.  If that happens, it will challenge Forza 5 and Forza Horizon 2 for best racing game on the Xbox One.

If we refused to buy games until they work this "rush to gold and fuck the QC" madness would end. I no longer pre-order and I always rent before I buy, that includes Turn 10 and Bethesda games.

I agree, but even by renting the game, you are still indirectly funneling money to the publishers that force the defective games to market.

I also will concede that notwithstanding the likely Day 1 problems, I do anticipate and look forward to playing the big releases on Day 1.  blush

Perhaps, but I spend $3.78 for a five night rental as opposed to $60 plus tax for a new game, this is roughly 6.3% of a new game purchase price. If everyone did that publishers would notice that their profits were down 93.7% and would likely put more effort into pushing out games that work. But you and I both know that someone reading this has already preordered Forza 6.

That is a pretty good price.  I remember Blockbuster being much more expensive back in the day.

Also, I'm not sure it works that way.  I think the rental place buys the game at an inflated "rental copy" price, so even if nobody rents it the developer still makes their money.

It absolutely does work that way. The rental place was going to buy it anyway...they bought 2 copies of Duck Dynasty. You may think that game companies don't notice when consumers buy or don't buy their games, but I can assure you that it is about the only thing they do notice. But you're right, at least they can count on the local Family Video to cover the shortfall from disillusioned consumers...I'm sure that would make up the difference.

I'm following you.  I wasn't trying to insinuate this scenario, just that even if nobody rents a particular game from Family Video the publisher already made money by Family Video buying the game.  The customer renting the disc doesn't put any more money into the publishers hands.

Yep, that point is fair and true.

Yes, they do.  Game rental companies buy the games from publishers because they are going to rent the game to consumers.  When consumers rent the game, particularly if a lot of us do, that causes the game rental company to buy more copies to meet demand.  My original point in bringing this up is that if we really want publishers to release bug-free, ready to rock games, we should not pre-order, buy or rent broken games.  I readily admit that I cannot abide by this rule, I regularly pre-order or buy broken games, including the Xbox One version of Project CARS.  But when Jones rented the game for 10 days, he did indirectly provide financial support to the publisher.

True enough, but if it had been a good game they would have received the $3.78 indirectly as well as another $60 from a retail purchase.Renting the game does funnel some money to the publisher, but they can't get my $60 unless I give it to them. Considering my occupation, not renting games is not an option: review codes are few and far between and I cannot afford to buy every game I review, but I would hope that by sharing my experience with the game I can prevent someone else from paying for a broken game, or at least help the potential consumer make an informed decision.

Funny thing is T10 doesn't view Forza as a racing game.  To them it's a car game that promotes car culture through track based events (Motorsport) or open world environments(Horizon).  The result are games made to be more accessible at the expense of functionality so that they appeal to the widest group of users possible.

I haven't picked up PCars and I'm not sure I will any time soon.  I see PCars as the opposite of Forza. It looks like it's a very functional game in that there's a tremendous amount of things you can tweak from car setups to race formats to force feedback settings etc...  But the cost is a game that isn't as accessible and requires a fairly steep learning curve.  More casual players that just want to hop in a car and race may shy away.

I can see PCars challenging Forza for the hearts and minds of the sim racing community but they are part of a larger demographic that T10's aiming for.

The best word I can use to describe FM5 is incomplete.  Either it took them longer than expected to develop the game in time for launch or they weren't expecting to be a launch title and M$ "influenced" them to be a launch title.  Either scenario resulted in a step down from FM4.  I'm hopeful that T10 can respond with FM6 the same way Playground Games did going from FH1 to FH2.

TL;DR?

Forza isn't a full-on racing game and hasn't been since at least FM4.
PCars is made for a specific segment of gamers that play and enjoy racing/car games.
Hoping T10 has learned from their FM5 experience and delivers with FM6.

Exactly.  Forza is a mix of arcade and sim physics, much easier to pick up and a lot quicker to master.  Project Cars, Assetto Corsa, iRacing, etc are nearly the polar opposite despite the fact that they seem so similar on the surface.  They're games more for people who enjoy true to life racing in nearly every aspect.  If Forza had true sim physics it wouldn't sell as well.

Both have their place.

I hope we are all past the point that you aren't considered a traitor by going to another system for whatever reason.  And he's just playing it at a show.  We have no concrete evidence that Mr Bacon has purchased that crappy system.  j/k.  I have in my household as of this writing an....

Intellivision, SNES, Atari Lynx, Gameboys, PS1, PS2, WII, 2 360's, PS4, 4 Computers, and 4 Nintendo DS's- long & short ones.  And God knows how many kindle, laptop & phone app games.  And one of my favorite early tech games....https://youtu.be/hF-ywS31wMM

Just finished a side race series during my 3rd season in career mode.  It was on Ruapuna GP.  Chose the Audi LMP 900 and thought I had the learned the track fairly well.  Until the next morning when I went out for practice in the scenario.  Oops.  I had practiced on the afternoon in the sun and this was early daybreak.  I thought WTF then realized this was the kind of game I wanted.  One that throws me curves.  Qualified a respectable 20th out of 20.  laugh Then the race started.  A 15 lapper.  I had even cut that down from a 30 lapper.

A raging thunderstorm.  surprise  I just had to chuckle.  And settled down to just surviving the race WITHOUT any major off road excursions.  It happened.  yes Through my grit and determination I worked my way up to 19th place just missing the podium by a few spots.  Thank God the last place guy did a pit stop for some reason.  kiss

All this in cockpit mode without the wheel and arms and of course the "no restarts" mode and damage/mechanical in effect.

Picked it up for the PC this weekend on a Steam Sale.  Figured for $20 it would be worth piddling around in for some single player enjoyment.  Love running the Sierra up the California coast.  :)
