Drunks vs Lock Masters

CapnHun wanted to know what was more annoying to me as a Captain of my tug, drunk pleasure boaters or Lock Masters? Well for me that's an easy one. The Lock Master is the guy who controls the Lock he's working, he can if he so decides and the situation warrants it, deny passage to anyone through the lock, except a government vessel. Government vessels(Coast Guard, Army Corp of Engineers)have priority over everyone when locking. So as long as your nice and don't do anything too stupid he's cool. There is a locking priority though as I alluded to above.

Baton Rouge@2300

0001 - Well we made it down to Baton Rouge LA which means 'Red Stick' if ya didn't know. It's been a long and very tiring trip due to the nasty weather. As we were making the last few bends before Baton Rouge came into view the moon came up and lit our way. I caught a couple of pics of it and will be posting all of them tomorrow if I'm not too busy. We'll be hanging around New Orleans for a little while and then hopefully head to the shipyard for some needed repairs.

Navagation lessons

Here's a little insight into how us big fellers meet without running over or into each other. While at the wheel I listen to my VHF radio on a channel that all of the boats on the river monitor. We use this channel to talk to one another, it's our traffic channel. As I move along I will broadcast my position on the radio and see if anyone is coming my way, example. "M/V Roger Adams is southbound at 'Grant Creek' checking on any northbound traffic. If someone is near, say within 5 miles they will answer and we will decide on where and what "whistle" we will see each other on.

Memphis at 1200

1200 - Today was pretty awful. The rain wouldn't stop and when it slackened the fog rolled in. We passed through Memphis around 1200, I snapped a couple of picks and will post all of them once we get down to New Orleans around Friday. I passed my dad, he works on a tug for another company, that was pretty cool and at the same time my cousin is south bound behind me on another boat. We'll be able to chat all the way down using our radios. I hope tonight is better or I'm pulling over!
