In case there was any doubt, Guitar Hero has jumped the shark

A picture says a thousand words. Two low res cell phone pictures from last night's excursion to Barns & Nobel says more than I could hope to waste on the topic.

Found a this week's excursion to Barns & Noble

Mass Effect = Trek Wars

I keep playing far too much Mass Effect at night, mostly because the game is really that fun, flaws and all. When I first heard about the game I though, "Bioware is doing Star Wars without the license, that's cool". The more I play the game the more I think that Bioware really built a Star Trek game with force powers and no license.

Lets break down the comparisons:

Humanity has only in the last generation or two perfected FTL travel and discovered other alien races with more advanced tech.

You command the most advanced scout and exploration ship in the fleet

Rock Band - Solo Guitar

Part of the nightly ritual in my house is a good 30 minutes or so of Rock Band. My daughter will take the mic (which I wisely leave unplugged, she's 2 1/2 after all) and I'll heft my stratocaster and we'll work through her favorite set list:

Music in games

Playing through Mass Effect has really made me notice how much music in a game makes or breaks the experience for me. Frankly, I've been very disappointed in the music in Mass Effect. I still think the game is excellent and easily worth the money if you enjoy space opera or role playing games. But the music just does not drive the type of emotional response that it could and should.

On Mass Effect

I'm admittedly a geek for any game that has a strong story. The more the game world feels like there's some interesting bit of story or history around every corner the more I want to sit down and explore the world. The back story bits especially, make the game world feel old, feel like it has a deep history to explore and learn about. Halo was successful at making the game world feel like it had a rich history to explore, as did Bioshock, Asheron's Call and even World of Warcraft.

Too many games too little time

Halo 3, Gears of War, Rock Band, Viva Pinata, Mass Effect, N+, Rez and Burnout Paradise. The list of games I've either played or wanted to play all week. It's weeks like this that make me wish I could just say "screw it" take a couple days off work and laze around the house playing games like I was a high school kid again. Of course if my daughter wasn't quite as addicted to Viva Pinata I might have played more of the others. She's still too young for daddy to be fraggin' noobs (halo/gears) or shagging boobs (mass effect) while she's still up and wanting to watch.
