Maxis/EA/Origin FAIL
Maxis/EA/Origin FAIL
So I was interested in the new Simcity that was coming out, I used to play it back in the day, and was looking forward to checking out the revamped/new version. I purchased it last night through my Origin app on my computer, everything went great....played it till 4am this morning. In the 4 hours I spent playing it, there were some definent pro's and con's to the game, but every game has those.
Fast forward to today, noonish.....I go to load it up and play a little more of it, and it stops loading and gives an error code, to which i researched and come to find out.....with this version of Simcity, you need a persistant internet connection, (which of course I have) it allows you to share cities with people and build together and what not. Well, apparantly EA/Maxis/Origin dropped the ball BIG TIME, as their servers can not handle the volume of people trying to download and play the game....way to go guys!! Yet another failure by EA.
Has anyone else got or tried to get or play this game? Got any more info besides the suckage that already is?
Yeah I want to say I remember this happening with 1943 as well, it's sad it's not surprising. Actually didn't it used to happen a lot with their PC games?
"Has anyone else got or tried to get or play this game?" I'm seeing a LOT of talk about it over on Reddit. You're most definitely not alone.
Sad. I was going to buy it when I got home from work today.... Guess I'll be waiting. FUCK EA
I have a couple other Sims games...Simcity 3000, & The Sims3 and Supernatural, and have never had a problem with them....of course they are not an online game, so no server's are needed.
Now when I try to load up the game I get...."An unexpected error has occured, please try again in a few moments" Error code 262145:5 stops loading at 15%
This is nothing new for EA, pretty much EVERY game EA launches that depends on its servers to work falls on it's ass launch day and a few days afterwards. If you buy an EA game that's just the experience you're buying into, they are totally clueless on how to estimate load per servers and have enough of them.
It's interesting looking at Metacritic. Professional reviewers are giving the game 8's, but the user reviews are in the 3's. What a Huge difference. From what I've played of it, it seems to me like the experience is much smaller than past sim cities. Seems like population starts to max out at about 250,000 instead of millions. Seems like they've spent so much time in the individual sim/vehicle what not simulations that it's taken something away from the overall city simulation which i think that's why we all re playing, the city animation we could give a shit about what the individual sims are doing. It also seems like once you fix a problem people keep bitching about it and protesting your town hall and even your advisors still tell you there's a problem when there's clearly not one. And then there's the online component where variables outside of your control will affect your game which i guess is kind more accurate to real life but not really something I was looking for in the game.
On the plus side i love that you don't need to run sewers, power lines, water lines and all that subterranian stuff anymore. It just all gets installed automatically along roads. Probably the feature i love most about the new sim city but overall i think simcity 2000 is still as good as this game ever got, it was all downhill from there.
update: I FINALLY got it going again....had to get help from a better versed computer expert than myself....had to copy all files, and relocate, and do some other shit, and so far I'm up and running again....but now I got no time to play it lol
I built huge cities in SimCity 2000, and then imported them into SimCopter and flew around in them.
I'm really unclear why this game requires an online component even for single player. If I can make a region only for myself, why can't I do that offline?
Also, the tiny sized areas for building cities are probably why the system requirements seemed ancient at first glance. I get that each section in a region is supposed to specialize and whatnot, and you can use excess power from one to feed another. Not sure why that can't be done how it was before - without barriers. Especially for single player, or friends only regions. I'd like to have say, three city areas in one region that are massive compared to what we have now, but can't.
I think single player offline should have been included, as well as options for number of city areas in a private region (and by relation their size).
Anyways, I attempted to play the beta and it wouldn't run on my powerhouse of a computer. If that isn't fixed now then I can't even launch the game. I tried using just one monitor, and just one graphics card, and that didn't help either at the time. Oh well.
I agree....there is the option to start your own city in a region and play privately, where no one can join your game, and you can't join anyone elses game, but your still online.....you'd think that if you choose that option then you could just play offline. I've had no issues with my computer running the game, or any other game I've loaded....I have a pretty nice system I bought from ibuypower and have all the processors and graphics cards and space I need. I mean its sad when I can play SWTOR, or DC Universe online flawlessly with thousands of people, but can barely launch Simcity due to the lack of knowing what the fuck they are doing when they design a game!!
update to the update.....game was successfully installed, and goes all the way up to loading your city, new or resuming a previous, then message pops up....cannot load your city at this time, try again soon. I tried to switch servers (you have to exit game, then re launch to get to this option).....6 servers options.....half were full, half were available....none would load.

lesson's learned.....don't buy games on launch day, and no more buying of EA games
sigh
I always liked Simcity too. Thanks for posting up your issues rik. I think I will pass on this.
I'm kind of shocked this hasn't stablized yet. I was really hoping to come back to this thread today and hear how great the game was work etc... I REALLY want to buy this game, but the whole EA Origin thing just holds me back. :(
I didn't even know this game existed until I saw a commercial last night. I was going to purchase it immediately (spent many, many countless hours playing previous iterations) but now I will hold off until I hear some better news.

One guy said there was an 8 hour hang up? Ouch. ><
The article also states they had issues with this during the beta.
LoL at this .... FAIL
I FINALLY got to get in and play some last night.....(had to use a european server) finally was learning to do stuff, and getting my town built up, and making a profit, and......it crashed.....reboot, and the server i was on was full....and only one server was available, so I go in....have to start a new game because you can't transfer cities from server to server....so I started a new town....got it pretty much full with no space left to build in about half an hour....so i picked another region...did the same....went for a Vegas style city.....got maybe a couple hours of game play in before it crashed again.....servers full once again.
I'm not giving up completely...cuz i spent $$ on the sumunabitch.....my honest opinion of the game itself....minus the DMR, online all the time, lack of server crap.....I enjoy it....it seems easier to make a profit than the old games....and making circular roads is fun!!!
my personal rating of the game
without factoring in the online, server issues, and just counting the "meat" of the game itself.....I give it a strong 7/10
Factoring in the online server issues....I give it a 3/10
A bit dissapointed. I was looking forward to this one actually. I think I'll add it to the "Bargin Bin" list and give it a whirl then. Maybe they will have fixed some of the issues by then.....but being EA.....I'm not going to hold my breath.
LoL.... Steam Marketing is on the ball man ... gotta love it
That's why I love Steam.
GOG did something similar on twitter, not as glamorous though.
"Server problems? DRM-free SimCity 2000 needs no internet to play AND it's only $5.99 http://j.mp/WuweEO
#simcity"https://twitter.com/gogcom
Day 3....and still no better....worse infact. They added more servers, but this just means more servers are busy, and longer queue times. Half the time the game will load up, and right when you think your going to get to play.....NOPE....."Cant connect to server's, please try again". Or, you get to load up your last game you got to play.....and your shit isn't saved, and you have to redo what has already been done. Seem like the only time it has run for me is at 3am in the freaking morning It's maddening.
Here's what IGN had to say today...

I get it now, Sim City 'Limited' edition ..... I guess accusing them of false advertising isn't going to fly LoL

Some seriously angry people out there about this.
Even Amazon UK stopped selling it yesterday. A lot of people getting refunds!

so i got the game at midnight and had no problems for a couple days, then last night i had long wait time and a lot of crashes. When i was able to start a game i was experiencing so many WEIRD bugs, like not being able to sell or buy utilities i thought i was going crazy!
i like the game and i hope the server issues so away.
Once everything is ok, lets start up a 2old2play Region and all get into the same game...
Twitch
I'd be down with that six months from now when the game actually works lol...
Agreed. I have nice region of land on North America East 2 with 16 cities we can use if the servers ever decide to work. I've given up even trying to play until they fix these issues. The game is fun, but these issues are killing it for me.
AGAIN AND STILL
Is it me, or can they not even structure proper sentences now?
I did get to play for about 6 hours yesterday, got a couple cities up and going pretty good...before it crashed This ^^^ is what happend when I just tried to play a game that I spent $60 on, and should be able to play when I want, and for however long I want....it's pretty simple, you pay for goods and services, you expect to GET goods and services. I wonder what kind of shitstorm will happen on the 16th when EA is offering up a free game for all of our "inconvienence".
So yeah, I have 3 regions set up on North America East 1 server.....if and when it runs properly....look me up SicRik.....maybe we can build cities together until we cant lol
sigh
I've heard that the pathing algorithms are hosed in it too?
That sucks. You are not the only angry person Rik.

Furthermore, you can forget about a refund from EA if you bought a download. Something to think about for future purchases:

The real question is, what "free game" are they giving out. Is this going to be an out dated FPS or Madden game? Is this an "indie" title that EA is pushing?
