Oh ya i know Laptop cams have been exploited by trojans, there's websites dedicated to publishing images taken from those cams. THe xbox though connects to a closed Xbox Live network that's a network within the internet. So someone would need to get thru that layer first and so far Microsoft has been pretty clearn that the xbox live network hasn't ever been hacked into.
So if people outside the network can't get in, but there's always the potential of a disgruntled employee inside the network getting access I guess. I suppose an ex potentially could listen in on their ex's feed maybe? I 'm not sure exactly what is accessible remotely by kinect but i guess that could be plausable.
I think the biggest risk is that the thing is going to have Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 'whatever' on it.... that's probably the biggest potential for getting an exploit on your system. As they open the box to more and more of the internet, the risks get higher and higher. I suppose it also could be plausable to get a trojan installed on your system that could open your feed to remote viewing. It just kinda of depends on how locked down the OS is for running stuff and what could be accessed.
Anyway.... I unplug my kinect when the box is off now as is, so i'll probably do the same. I'll just have to deal with needing it plugged in to power it up and it'll be on while i'm using it.
i find it incredibly hard to believe that Ms went into this used game dmr by themselves, im waiting for the ps4 to drop the ball and admit to having some form of it on their system as well. as of this moment, after reading all the info on both systems im not going to buy either.
GameStop shares hit by worries of used-game fee on Xbox One
May 22, 2013, 1:03 PM
A confusing array of reports about whether Microsoft Corp. intends to charge some sort of special fee for playing used games on the new Xbox One has squelched a strong run-up in GameStop shares — just ahead of the retailer’s first-quarter earnings report.
Reuters
The Xbox One.
GameStop GME+0.16% shares have slumped nearly 10% so far this week, with most of that drop taking place after Microsoft MSFT+0.26% held an event at its Redmond, Wash., headquarters on Tuesday to lift the wraps on the new Xbox One game console. This is the first notable drop since GameStop began a strong run following its last earnings report on March 28, with the shares surging more than 40% to just below the $40 mark by last Friday’s close — the highest level in nearly five years for the stock.
The stock was last trading down 2.3% by midday Wednesday. GameStop reports results for its first fiscal quarter on Thursday morning, before the opening bell.
The drop is notable, especially given that the Xbox One will represent a new piece of gaming hardware for the company to sell in its stores this holiday season. But GameStop still makes most of its profits from the sale of used games. This segment accounted for about 48% of the company’s gross profits for the company’s most recent fiscal year, though it only made up 27% of total revenues for that period.
So concerns about whether used games will play on the new console, or whether they will require some extra fee to do so, are pertinent for the company. An early look at the game console published by Wired Magazine suggested that it would be difficult for pre-owned games to play on the console, given that each game is installed on the hard drive before it is played.
A Microsoft spokesperson sent the following statement to MarketWatch, which does not fully put to rest the question about a fee or payment associated with used games:
“We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail. Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.”
Analysts who cover GameStop are also hedging on the question; Sean McGowan of Needham told clients in a note on Wednesday that “more details are needed” to assess the potential impact to GameStop. Colin Sebastian of Robert W. Baird said he expects “formal clarification by Microsoft in the coming weeks.”
Michael Olson of Piper Jaffray said he expects that the uncertainty will cloud GameStop’s shares in the near-term, as there is not yet enough information to “come to a final conclusion” about the matter. But he added that Microsoft could put itself at risk by such a fee.
“Given the PS4 [PlayStation 4] will not be restricting used game sales in any way that is currently apparent, we believe Microsoft would be putting the Xbox One at a disadvantage by creating a cumbersome used game exchange experience,” Olson wrote in a note to clients on Wednesday.
I am not impressed and more concerned about what a money dump the Xbox one will be. I dont need nor do I want one unit to control everything in my living room. Currently I dont have cable, or really even local TV....I dont watch TV, there are a few programs I keep up with, but if they are not available on Netflix, I can watch them for free on my PC. It aggrivates me that they seem to be rushing all this to get it in and make their money by the holidays, and then shortly into the next year, my Xbox 360, and the 100 or so games I have for it, will be obsolete.
I watched the "reveal", and was underwhelmed. I got my Xbox to play games, and when the extra's like Netflix and music downloads, and internet explorer were added, it was great, if I want them, they are there, if not, its not a big deal. But it seemed that the reveal was 75% focused on tv, sports, and movies, and barely 25% focused on games. And dont get me started on the fee's, and the always online....and the ugly ass Beta/Vhs recorder looking design.
I'm not a big tech guy, I'm just a casual gamer that would like to purchase a game and play it, without all the hassles, fee's, licenses, and bullshit that seems to be coming about.
I think its about time my PC became a full time gaming system.

Well, if there are others who feel like sicrik, you could all upgrade your PCs a little, take back your gaming experience and come join 2old2WASD for some PC gaming. We currently don't have the numbers for any serious single game support but seducing 10-12 of you to PC gaming and we could be in business! COD Ghosts clan night, or BFX clan nights? Bring gaming full circle back to where most of us probably started...on PC games! Not only are games cheaper, we have been able to instantly download them for years...and guess what?? Your PC also plays movies and TV shows and pretty much defines backward comparability game play. Better still, the easiest access to split screens, fantasy support, and PORN!!!
Quite honestly, if you take a step back and look at things objectively, the Xbox One pretty much looks and performs like a 3 or 4 year old computer with only half of the abilities! Drink our koolaid and try it out.
hmmm...that sucks quite a bit actually. I converted my A40s to PC gaming awhile back but I do have a much cheaper set of X12s that I like. I wonder what kind of set will come standard in the box...waiting on a decent aftermarket set would kind of suck.
I bought an expensive gaming headset for Xbox 360, and found it to be vastly inferior to the $20 regular headsets in every way I cared about.
I'm not concerned about privacy things. I am concerned that Microsoft is communicating things so poorly that misinformation is crippling their future sales and their image.
I'm sad people find this to be a device that isn't for them as gamers and is only for TV people. Clearly with the vast increase of games for it even in the first year of its life that isn't true. To me, it has more games than ever, and also includes other features and capabilities too.

Just need official words to correct people.
I don't even know where to begin, everything about this console screams money grab to me.
First and foremost I'll say that I personally don't know anyone who uses the original headsets with their console period. They are the pinnacle of garbage and anyone who is serious about their gaming setup will have a good gaming headset that with this new console will be useless.
As for the privacy concerns? I don't see how anyone wouldn't be concerned. In this day and age anything can and will be hacked. I for one don't want a camera and mic watching my children's bedrooms, my bedroom and living rooms 24/7 on the chance that they wont get hacked. Mark my words, these Kinects will be hacked and people will be spied upon. As has been said above, it happens on webcams all the time....the only difference here is that unlike your laptop your new console will never turn off.
Why are you so sad that gamers are angry about this system? Microsoft has been trying to shovel this body as a controller thing on us for quite some time now....and gamers have responded in kind with a resounding no. I don't want to speak to my console, or it to speak to me. I have my Roku and Bluray player already and as most who are serious about their home theaters will tell you, we don't need Microsoft to solve anything for us. We are quite capable of controlling our TVs and other media just fine without talking to KITT or making inane hand gestures at the screen.
The biggest and most obvious gripe here however is the money grab for the used game market. What I cannot understand is why they are shooting themselves in the foot like this. It's absolutely moronic to tell your customers that the games they purchased will only work on one console without having to pay for the game again. In my house at the moment we have multiple 360's.....so if I buy the new Mass Effect and play it on my profile in the living room, my son has to pay to play it on his profile in his room.
This is exactly why they took away the family plan. So that they wouldn't have people sharing their games within their own family. I mean how fucking cheap and petty are you? You have to charge me to lend a game to my son or daughter? Also there's the Gamefly issue. I have been with that company since day one and have bought all of my non collector's editions from them, though the discount on the "Used games" isn't why I love the service so much. It's because I can play the game and decide if I want to buy it. With all of the absolutely god awful titles out there this is essential. Some people cannot afford to waste $60 on a game that turns out to be a turd. With Gamefly, I can rent the game and have it the same day it is released, so I'm the only one who's had it in his grimy little hands. Then, if I like it, I "Keep it" and all is right with the world. I cannot tell you how many time I've been excited about a title only to get it from Gamefly and find it to be fucking horrendous.
First and foremost I'll say that I personally don't know anyone who uses the original headsets with their console period. They are the pinnacle of garbage and anyone who is serious about their gaming setup will have a good gaming headset that with this new console will be useless.
I disagree 100%. I love gaming and I am "serious" about my gaming setup, but I could give a rats ass about my headset. I've been rocking the wireless MS headset since it came out. It works fine and I don't need anything else.
And as for your rant on the used games..... we know squat about their plans. You are basing everything off rumors. Taking the wait and see approach is fine, but already making up your mind about something that has so little info about it is a bit premature.

I don't need to shove my head up a pig's ass to know there's bacon in there. It's obvious that they are trying to kill the market and if you're a Gamefly or Gamestop you're fucked.
As for the family plan thing, again it does nothing for my family having multiple profiles on one console. We use multiple consoles and as such are fucked on both the games and subs angle. As I said in the article it's moronic as it's actually a bad investment for families to purchase multiple machines.

I think a lot of what you are saying is based on incomplete information and assumptions. I'm not trying to slam you here, but the ability to delink a game with a console at either the consumer level for trade in, or provided to a service like gamefly would solve tons of issues you think are set in stone.
I also think the incomplete information is causing your backlash about multiple consoles. Once they fully reveal the trading of games part of this I think you won't have as much to rage about. It's probably as simple as digitally handing it to your family member. It might even take less time than a disc game does today to swap to be honest.
I'm personally not going to take an approach to this that includes rage and hate about unconfirmed, undetailed plans and especially not get angry about rumors that are still unproven.
If there are factual things to be angry about that's fine, but getting upset about something that might never be a reality or might even turn out to be improved over Xbox 360 is extremely silly, to me.
Again, not trying to slam anyone, just saying take a deep breath and wait until people know what they are talking about.

agreed. Who knows, maybe you can link and de-link, like you said. Maybe that's what the comment about "you can trade games with people" came from. If I can unlink and give to my friend to link to theirs, then they could use it. Then when they gave back I could re-link to mine.
No one knows much of anything yet, but people are getting bent out of shape for the hell of it.

I love that mic and still use it for quick gaming occasionally. The thumb switch is one of the best ideas - easy to mute mic without hunting, if you have to cough or something.
Honestly Azure, you already made your feelings about switching to PC clear before the conference, I remember you posting about that. So why do you care to even comment on this? Your posts feel very tinfoil hat.

Oh for fuck's sake really? I forgot how things go around here. Enjoy the fanboy suckfest. Sorry to have tried to interject a different perspective.

Come on Azure.. you say something and then I remind and call you out on it, and then you get pissed off...
You don't want to like this console. No matter what was shown, you're mind was already made up to go PC. So everything you've posted has been negative to a fault. Very conspiracy theorist thinking, like microsoft wants to record video of us? Give me a break man..... the only thing the kinect will be doing when the box is not on will be in a reactive ready state for voice control. It's not recording, it's not using video 24/7. It's the same as a wake-on LAN. Ready to receive input, but otherwise benign. Talking about unplugging it to not be hacked and spied upon. That's ridiculous.

Totally agree, I mean, just keep a roll of tin foil next to the console, right? Hmm, Can you imprint a logo on tin foil?
"202P Cone of Silence Kinect Cover" as seen on TV and in a living room near you!

How is the used game market on PC? Juuuuuust sayin ;)
Google Glass came under some privacy questions. Some were obvious such as concerns about secretly filming, or social etiquette in a bathroom or movie theatre. However one question that was asked was if it has facial recognition technology. It does not come with it and Google has no plans to include it themselves.
Now, Xbox One DOES come with face recognition in every console - something the US government was scrutinizing Google's product about. It also stores peoples faces online as well as their voiceprints.
While I am not concerned about Microsoft checkin out my face, I can understand where questions would be raised here. Microsoft has it so that everyone watching TV with this device has their face uploaded to the internet.
It is something to consider when more is revealed and if the public spotlight falls on that specific privacy issue.
it's actually a bad investment for families to purchase multiple machines.
I'm pretty sure you don't know what "investment" means.
and there is a difference between injecting a different opinion and just being a jackhole.
word. Game machines are not investments. I have two 360's so I can play in the living room or bedroom and have options to do the opposite of wherever my wife is if I want to play.
At the release I was pumped. 2 days later I'm now at the point of thinking 'Fuck this shit'. Microsoft needs to give out some set answers and quick.
All they are doing is creating a shit storm for them self's.
All though I do enjoy seeing people comment on the ps4 as they have obviously laid out a set plan of what they are doing. Not
There are two options, forgetting the Wii, XB1 or PS4, the XB1 has been...underwhelming to say the least, so thoughts are turning to the PS4, It has been stated loud and clear this machine will keep gaming at it's core, if that turns out shite for some reason? Well the PC will get another upgrade to keep it on the cutting edge, and by the time these consoles release the NVIDIA Titan Lite will be out there to tempt me. To be quite honest triple screen gaming has made my PC head and shoulders above the Box for immersion so maybe I have already made that decision anyway.
I remember the days when a games console was a games console, turn on, insert cartridge and play game. Why now does it have to be so complicated, from what I can see it's more important to put as many cool Apps and gadgets and to make sure your entertainment centre (I'm not calling it a games console because it isn't anymore) can do everything except cook the dinner. I just hope all this new technology doesn't ruin the basic pleasure of putting a disc into a machine and playing a game. Oh and don't get me started on what this Frankenstein will probably cost.

They want it in every living room - so they can't charge a ridiculous amount as that's at odds with their plan.
Now, you no longer need to put the discs in after the first time. You just pick what to play, and play.
I would like if it would cook me dinner though, that'd save time and it could probably find good recipes on the internet and ones that are trending. ;)
Okay, so, and maybe I misse this part. Will it record off cable? And can it be scheduled to record while I'm out? And will it record when I beat Fitzy again on Forza?

Worries of playing used games on the new XB1

The family plan thing.... http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/22/xbox-live-multiple-accounts/
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember my 360's coming with a wireless headset. This is the headset that I am referring to http://winsupersite.com/site-files/winsupersite.com/files/archive/winsupersite.com/content/content/127496/reviews/xbox360_hw_11.jpg
I'm pretty sure there is a better way to go about getting your bacon...
I'm pretty sure you don't know what "investment" means.
and there is a difference between injecting a different opinion and just being a jackhole.
word. Game machines are not investments. I have two 360's so I can play in the living room or bedroom and have options to do the opposite of wherever my wife is if I want to play.
So my X-11's are out? Guess they'll get used on the PC...
There'll be new X-11's made by somebody I'm sure...
You pardon me if I plug them in first and make sure...
I would like if it would cook me dinner though, that'd save time and it could probably find good recipes on the internet and ones that are trending. ;)
Kinect, make me an F'ing sammich !
Finally a use for the thing.
Okay, so, and maybe I misse this part. Will it record off cable? And can it be scheduled to record while I'm out? And will it record when I beat Fitzy again on Forza?
Inquiring minds want to know!
