Just saw this and just can't seem to think what the mind set is at Redmond. "Hmmm... we make billions of $$$, we must make more. We shall squeeze every last drop of $$$ from the consumer."
Not questioning your level of sanity EvilClaw just sharing my thought’s about this statement which I believe is true for EVERY publicly traded company in the World so why would MS be any different? Greed is a major ingredient of a Capitalists society.
Now continue with the bickering, Parcells is entertained.
Evilclaw, are you a gamestop store owner or something?
Otherwise I don't see what the big deal is for how used game sales become allowed. It doesn't sound difficult or horrible for consumers...
It just sounds like a Gamestop would use a device or scanner to deregister a disc. They scan games anyways while you trade in today, right?
If you can explain more of how this impacts you so negatively, I am genuinely interested in hearing the details.
To answer your question, no not an employee of GS nor do I own one. My concern is the cost that is passed on to the consumer becuase of this. The price of used games will go up. That is one way it affects me. Also why would you want a third party messing with your MS account and what games you have played or no longer play? I don't want that, the less hands in my account the better.
Lastly, MS has consistantly missed the message from gamers and OS consumers in that we want products that work WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN PURCHASED, not maybe sometime down the road with a patch here and there. If they could pool their collective resourses together to provide a quality product then we'd be happy. Thats just not the case with the exception of WIN 7. We all remember the RLD debacle, and we don't want that sort of thing again. They need to have more control over game development/servers/design for all games on their console, thats where they need to expend their energies. I feel that they are just following the same pattern of crank this shit out, advertise the crap out of it, sell it for a premium, and we will fix it later.

A) No cost is going to get "passed on" - Gamestop would go out of business if that happened. Just look at online passes. They were implemented and the used games dropped the exact same amount to compensate. No used games are going up in price - people will just buy new if that was the case.
B) It's not 1991 anymore with cartridges. This isn't a "toy" like a SNES was that is a dumb box. Steam games are ONLY digital and tied to your account, and you don't hear the PC guys complaining about that. It's happening, and you need to get used to it.
Evilclaw, are you a gamestop store owner or something?

I'm thinking one possible negative impact, is that this will eliminate private sales.
I rarely buy used games from retail establishments like Gamestop or BestBuy because I can find much better deals either locally via Craigslist or online using eBay. If we can no longer sell games to each other in a private setting because games have to be "de-registered" at a retail establishment, then that really sucks.
Also, a point of consideration I've not seen mentioned yet is that you have to figure the cost of a new game is going to increase. Each console launch games have generally increased by $10. I would be EXTREMELY surprised if the price of games does not increase with these new consoles.
This means even more money out of my pocket and if I can no longer find good private deals, then I will basically be forced into purchasing from retail.
If I have to go to retail, then I might as well buy new since the mark down on used games is a joke - especially if the game is going to require us to pay a fee to register the game.
Basically, until we've been given more clarification on the used games topic, it's not looking good for us consumers that benefit from private sales.

What i'm reding this morning on USED GAMES is this:
-Install the game on your system and the license is tagged to your gamertag and system id
-Trade your game in at an authorized place and your license is revoked not allowing you to run the game anymore
-New person buys game and ONE sees it's a new additional activiation of that game, asks for some amount of money
-activiation money is divided between microsoft and publishers
I don't really have a problem with this system, it allows devs to still get money for the sale of their games. RIght now Gamestop takes all that money and then the gamer uses the publishers/devs resources (if multiplayer) without ever giving them $. As long as that fee is something reasonable, like no mroe than 10 bucks, I think it's fine. Which would mean GS would need to resell games at no mor ethan $44 bucks which you can bet that revenue loss will be passed onto the people trading the game in, you probably won't ever get 30-35 bucks for a trade anymore, you'll probably get 20-25 for a hot game traded within 30 days of release and the value will drop like a rock after that.
I have been following the rumors for the one, and I would agree that the reveal was underwhelming. I have been waiting to pick up another Xbox so I don't have to compete with the kids on the weekends :).
Saw this article today and it brought back some anticipation for E3.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/05/how-the-xbox-one-draws-more-proces...
Basic jest is they may be putting a dedicated sever architecture together for all games. So even if it has less power on the box, the multiplayer processing will be done elsewhere.
More wait and see.
Used games, headsets, I could care less. Thing is unimpressive. It created 0 excitement amongst gamers. The "reveal" focused mostly on TV services rather than games and the games that were presented were lackluster. Maybe later in time better games will appear, but like some of you have mentioned this unit was designed entirely with the sole purpose of how to squeeze the most money out of you.
Like Tank mentioned most of the people really didn't care for it. M$ screwed up and if they come out with a ridiculous sale price, they will sink faster than the Titanic.

15 exclusives in the first year, and 8 new IPs. This wasn't a game reveal, it was a system and feature reveal.
E3 is where we'll see the games, same as Sony.
Articles from this week say the box will probably be less than the 360 launched at.
It doesn't seem Gamestop would have any access to a customers Xbox Live account though. They simply scan the disc people choose to bring in, and Microsoft removes its license link with any gamertags or consoles. No account stuff as far as I can tell.
Plus, if Gamestop jacks up prices, isn't that Gamestop screwing you over? They'd be the ones choosing to charge consumers more.
Still, we don't have all the details on gamestop type trade ins, or person to person trading such as digitally sending a game to your friend.
What Xbox One product at this point does not work and requires a patch down the road? There are plenty that need more explanation, but are there some that they said won't work at launch?
I believe I understand the argument for the cloud computing making up for the X1's resources being divided. Although I have to assume that added capabilities will be determined by how good your Internet plan is correct? I get the impression microsoft is banking on the States (I'm Canadian) I'm not sure but the internet plans down there must be way better then what we have access to and I'm thinking there are some other non-americans who have similiar issues? I admit I have a decent plan but I know not everybody does and I still occasionaly lose access so if we have no access does that mean the game doesn't run as well?
On a seperate issue I am still leary about the X1, I had one of the second gen 360's, it died (I'm not a heavy user) yes I replaced it and still use the ellite I got to replace the original. I'm hoping Microsoft learned their lesson. On the other hand I'd have no reservation with the playstation because I'm still using my original PS3 I bought over 6years ago and it shows no sign of it's age.
I will probably eventually get a X1 but most likely only because of Halo, and so far that's not a launch title, so that might let me sit back and watch to see how the console release's and is received before I invest in one.
And when my daughters are watching My Little Pony? What about then?
Yes, I will go ahead and promise. Does that make you feel better? It's a ridiculous conspiracy theorist type thinking.
Probably. But blindly trusting my family’s privacy to a gigantic, bureaucratic corporation to which I represent nothing more than a silly gameretag and potential revenue seems equally as ridiculous, especially for the purpose of my entertainment.

A mollowed response now:
There's a reason why I don't have a webcam on my PC. There's a reason I gave my Kinect away when I realised that it was always active in some way. The Kinect in the One has to be always on and can't be shielded as that will render you unable to operate your Xbox.
This thing can count the amount of people in your living room (the kinect can already do that BTW).
There's too much room for abuse here, maybe not by hackers (or maybe even more so), but indeed by a huge corp that can, with the kinect, look into your livingroom at will if they want to. The technology isn't even new, the CIA was using this kind of technology already in the mid sixties, lol. It has been perfected to a degree where I think that people should demand a clear, concise and open explaination from MS what it is exactly the Xbox One Kinect does and doesn't do.
Links don't work, but I did burst out laughing Tank. That was awesome.
Edit: Found the pages in teh Xbox 360 section of IGN instead of Xbox One section there (???) and the right button I could have guessed looking at my keyboard. The left seems like a generic one though, up to individual devs or app creators?

Fixt... not sure what happened there. I"m sure the problem was between the keyboard and my chair someplace.
It's BS the devolpers feel they deserve money after the ignitial sale of a product (That's what DLC is for.) I am not going to buy a used game for $40-50 and then have to pay another $20 just to acitvate it. I believe PS4 is going to do the same thing, they are just keeping it low key to see how much heat Microsoft is getting from it I believe.
I'm also not thrilled about the cloud computing. So if I loose internet, my games are not going to look as good....
I have been wondering why Microsoft went this direction and it seems to me that Microsoft wants to shift from selling gaming products to entertainment services.
Microsoft Office has always been a cash cow product for them, but now with Office 365, they are turning it into a $100 per year service:
The point I was making is that why should anyone want to play games on a system that is clearly not intended to play games on anymore? At least, not as main focus. The Xbone is a shit-sandwich.
Basically, you're stuck with what MS thinks your experience should be, coupled with some draconic restrictions and requirements that take choice away from you, instead of actually expanding the choices you have. The only realistic choice you have now is to buy or not to buy and given the fact that the alternative, a PC, is just as good and with some shrewd operating is actually cheaper plus it does not target you, the choice to walk away from MS should be rather obvious, unless you can't live without another iteration of Halo.
Tell me one thing the PC can't do that an Xbone can, purely on what is on offer gaming and mediawise. You can't even maintain that the Xbone is still a dedicated gamesplatform in all reason and reality.
The webcomic Little Critical Miss once said that a shitsandwich is horrible food, but once you eat one without shit, you kinda miss the shit. That's probably true if you can't remember a time where there was no shit involved at all. But we can. We're a community of older gamers after all and I do believe that I'm around folk who have played Zork first hand. What worries me is that as that less focus and more restrictions and more requirements making the Xbone more like a gatekeeper than your friendly gamingbuddy is seen as some kind of unavoidable progress and that we should therefore accept it.
As if your dollar-vote is not valid anymore. Which is kinda weird, because judging by the exit-state of console-gaming in the Netherlands and the resulting folding of some major retailchains overhere makes me believe that the €-vote is very powerful...
Is my PC always on and online? Yes, it is. Does my PC tell me what I can and can't do with my PC? No, it doesn't. In fact, it doesn't give a flying fuck what I choose to do, how I'm going to do it, with whome I'm doing it and if it even is me who is playing whatever game. Can I watch TV, Sports, You Tube, Machinima and whatever on my PC? Yes, I can. I can also suf the internet, be in several networks at once, do something unrelated to whatever I'm truly doing, all the while free of Big Brother laying in wait to catch me doing something that doesn't sit well with some faceless assholes in the US.
basically using the Kinect to count the number of program viewers to verify licensing compliance.
I also know that Kinect 2 can be used as an advertising goldmine.
sees guy drinking beer while watching sports - shows Budweiser commercial in corner window see kids on floor playing legos - shows adverts for Legos and cookies hears a teenager listening to Justin Bieber - streams ads for his latest album hears mom yelling at a toddler - flags this for CHild Services government agency sees man cleaning a pistol on coffee table - flags for BATF and local Law enforcement
Because you did not read all the fine print in the XB One Terms of Service -
uses Kinect to amass information about you and your family and sells it to marketeers, advertisers, government agencies and whoever else pays them.
Sheez, if I were a big advertiser - i would PAY microsoft to make Kinect 2 mandatory.
I would really want a careful look at the XB One TOS before buying the thing - you know, the wall of fine print everyone just clicks "Accept" on without reading.

Yes, I have posted above that I'm very interested to learn what it is exactly what the Kinect monitors. And what it doesn't. A mess of pages back I made the joke that having spontanious whoopy with the missus on the couch is probably not a good idea anymore. ^^

Kinect 2.0 = always on standby mode waiting for voice command. It's a vocal "on button." It's not video'ing you in your sleep.

You're assuming that in order to have SPONTANIOUS whoopy, one has the presence of mind to switch the Xbone (nearly) off. ^^
There is this constant mention of all this great stuff at a lower price, now correct me if I'm wrong and I'm pretty sure that will happen the price of this machine has not been announced by Microsoft as of yet. Therefore all this talk of a low price is pure speculation no matter the source. I have read many different prices ranging from €400 up to €800 personally I would think the €800 is a bit on the high side. If its released at €300 I will be first inline, €400 seems fair but I would have to think about it anything over that will result in me waiting for a price drop.
Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they are wrong, just saying.

Fine print software licensing aside - the shift is to a constant revenue stream at the expense of
consumer choice and flexibility.
I think the same thing is happening with consoles.
Microsoft is not selling XB1 as a product, but as a service.
Because the games are now tied to DRM and an MS account to work, consumers really don't own them anymore as products.
They are basically game subscriptions, and if you violate some fine print term in MS's licensing, they can basically stop
you from playing that game at whim.
XBone consumers have basically been converted from home/product owners, into renters.
And as Diablo 3 and Sim City has shown, once your product is chained to a service,
service outages basically deprive you of your use.
Yes, XBox Live is already pretty much a mandatory service - but mainly for multiplayer gaming.
With XBone, ALL your gaming is now dependent on Microsofts service and the quality of your ISP.
This deal about used games is kind of a sidetrack, the problem for consumers is much deeper.
just my 4.5 centavos
Yes, I can. I can also suf the internet, be in several networks at once, do something unrelated to whatever I'm truly doing, all the while free of Big Brother laying in wait to catch me doing something that doesn't sit well with some faceless assholes in the US.
adding 5.5 centavos more...
I have also wondered about the mandatory kinect 2 and why would MS go to the expense of bundling
this with all systems...
then i read this: Xbox One: will kinect 2 use Visual DRM
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/24/xbox-one-will-kinect-2-use-visual...
basically using the Kinect to count the number of program viewers to verify licensing compliance.
I also know that Kinect 2 can be used as an advertising goldmine.
sees guy drinking beer while watching sports - shows Budweiser commercial in corner window
see kids on floor playing legos - shows adverts for Legos and cookies
hears a teenager listening to Justin Bieber - streams ads for his latest album
hears mom yelling at a toddler - flags this for CHild Services government agency
sees man cleaning a pistol on coffee table - flags for BATF and local Law enforcement
Because you did not read all the fine print in the XB One Terms of Service -
uses Kinect to amass information about you and your family and sells it to marketeers,
advertisers, government agencies and whoever else pays them.
