To expound: the new weapon properties aren't in custom games because 343 changed the title with their back end tweaking. A title update would make it so this weren't an issue in the future.
I read it as, they are still learning how to do this.
Actually it is a plan to avoid the MS bean counters. TU cost much more money to distribute and QC before release. The last TU was to allow easy changes via gametypes.

Do I need to download these before playing in the 50-and-over group tonight? (I'm guessing the answer is "encouraged but not necessary," but I want to make sure)

No but we won't have them unless someone plays on them in MM today. I have a few.
After hearing about the weapons tuning I decided to try it out last night. Lo and behold I did really good in the two matches I was in. Especially the Slayer Pro match. So far I am liking the changes, so much so that I will be playing this a lot more.

People are confused about the gametypes and how they affect the weapons. They are also thinking it's the map itself that has an effect or that it's the weapons laid out the map.
My recommendation is to delete every custom gameype you have and then rebuild them using the new gametypes from Halo Waypoint or MM.
I have no idea if the tuning will get me to play on a more regular basis, but I am supposing I'll have a better time now when I do.
I'm fairly sure you will like the tuned weapons. You'll still have to put up with Infinity settings in Customs but I think it's a reasonable trade off.

Oh, I've already played a solid 5 hours or so with them on Monday night. I do like them; the game is much faster and it's going to take some time for a lot of people to ramp back up to the old Halo, the better Halo.
The LightRifle was fine without the buff in my opinion, but now its a raging death god. I am pleased. In a game of BTB on Exile the other night I got my sixth Perfection by going 25-0, all Banshee kills.

And....the release date on those was november...not sure of what to download...
Still pretty redonkulous to have to now have defunct "default" slayer settings. what a headache.
I got JIPed into a couple of games. I was practically a savior. How is that possible?
Love the SAW and extra ammo. Pull the trigger, walk at a guy and he won't be there when you arrive. That's how it should have worked all along.
DMR seems fine.
LR is the cat's ass, zoomed.
BR is worth using.
AR didn't reign but is better.
Warthog turret is to die for.
Dying can get ridiculous. Sometimes you're lucky if you feel two pings before death.
I had to resort to Tarantula tactics quite often. Wait in the dark and jump out with a big gun.
Movement is only just noticeably increased.
I'm liking the changes. Partly because other people are liking it, for now. Happy people play more.
What about the maps?

Sorry if the post was confusing Duke, just passing on the changes 343 made to MM maps for the tweaked settings.
Exile will play different without the Scorpion and Gauss Hog.
It actually plays worse now. Rather than moving a couple spawns, it's just a warthog fest.
I still do well on it, so don't count your eggs before they hatch :P
I felt like the increased movement speed helped me get some sword kills I might not have gotten before the tuning.
Thanks for the info! In the meantime I qeued some of them up to download onto my XBOX once I get home and fire it up.

We can rebuild them, we have the technology!
