I listened to Doodi almost ejaculating with excitement about this. I'm sorry I just don't get it. It may be the most wonderful product ever devised but I guess its up to Steam to explain and sell it to idiots like me.  I just want a horse that can run faster.

It's a horse that runs faster...It plays games, if you already have a steam account all the game are available to you, games are cheaper...Way cheaper. Steam sales and Humble sales are regular as clockwork and legit code selling sites add to the price falls.  I just picked up f1 2014 for 12 quid...it's still €62 for the xbox in my local gamestore, a few years of those kind of bargains and it almost pays for itself. The price is the thing that will define it's success or failure I guess. It's a bit of an oddball right enough, but maybe it is time to shake up what has become a rather complacent and arrogant console world.

But you also need another piece of hardware to set up between the couch and the TV, right?  Or is it between the PC and the TV?  Nah, I don't get the whole SteamBox stuff either.

Well, it sums up to these 3 categories of Steam Boxes, taken from Gabe Newell's comments in the article I linked earlier.

1. A pure streaming box that may play some casual type games.  Kind of like what Sony is doing with the Vita TV being able to stream from the PS4. Gabe mentioned a $100 target, but eventually he'd like to see it free.

2. A box that is roughly as powerful as the new consoles coming out. Can handle Streaming from a PC with Steam for Windows games, and will have SteamOS for anything Linux based.  Target: Gabe mentions $300, but I'm going to guess 400-500 based on some of the specs that were in a previous link.

3. Basically a high end gaming PC, with SteamOS instead of Windows. The number Gabe threw out was 1000 or more. Can't see this getting huge unless AAA titles come out for Linux, and specifically SteamOS.

Well, if its Linux-based, it has to all come down to the games, no?  If there are no games, then who is going to play it?  It can be faster or amazing or whatever, but folks need to develop for it.

I think it's both understandable and weid that VALVE is going down this path.

I believe VALVE is on the cusp of their business plateauing if not outright degradation.

Two huge competitors for gaming business are about to launch their new high end consoles. Consoles will not fail to stay at the top because most people do not want, or cannot put up with, the complexities of the PC world, be it Linux , Apple or Windows. That's why consoles, smartphones and handhelds work for so many people. Touch the Store, touch the Game and play the Game.

What's Gabe doing? He suggests Windows is not good, look at my potential hardware and operating system solutions. He knows he's late to the hardware party and has nothing to sell to customers. Many potential customers are happy with handheld devices and not going to any kind of PC. The operating systems are not the problem. Consoles attract all types of gamers and give hardcore gamers the simplicity of plug and play with most of the power of high end PCs at a very reasonable price. Those hardcore gamers must be the customers Gabe and VALVE are trying to attract and or keep. If he can sway enough of the market share his way, with all of this "wait and see my hardware and operating system", he may be able to maintain their position in the gaming segment for a bit longer. Maybe long enough to field a for real SteamBox console.

Hmm Steam concurrent users have grown by 300% this year, and membership is sitting at about 50 million according to the figures I can find, a couple of hours ago there were 6 million online using the service, so that is a fair user base and it's still growing. To be honest most of the PC Games I have bought recently are just install and play, some of the moddable ones require some tinkering, but all the mainstream games just work. Nothing like the hassle I was used to back in the day. Graphics card manufacturers like Nvidia supply software to do the job of optimizing your games for you and the whole process is a great deal less complex than it was. My original move back to PC was just for racing, but I have not bought a console game since I built it. PC games are cheaper, steam, sells, downloads, install and takes care of updates. See, click, pay, play. The long wait for the new consoles has brought a lot of people back to the PC, anyone who has bought or built a gaming rig in the last year has hardware already as good or better than the new consoles...I dunno, there is still life in the old dog, and while there is much to puzzle about with what steam are up to? The move to Linux makes sense, getting rid of that windows mess. With Nvidia support it's going to get mainstream devs interested. GPU and CPU sales have been going up while PC sales have been going down...Why? Gamers are building their own systems. So a fall in PC sales is not really indicative of a drop in PC gaming.

All in all an interesting time, we could see Linux go mainstream and Steam enter the living room with a range of consoles...I look on with interest and hope beyond hope that I get one of the top end steam boxes to test smiley

Kit, I kinda agree with you, snooze fest for me as well. To be honest though, my boys would be more interested than I on Steam.

I like otters and consoles. More plug n play, the consoles that is. Otters could give a crap about plugs, they just play.

I'm trying not to freak out. I went to the eye doctor this morning, and she said the vision and astigmatism in my right eye are the same, but in my left eye they're a lot worse. She said its nothing to worry about. But I'm worried. Anyone else have one eye suddenly get worse than the other??

I have severe astigmatism. Occasionally overs the years I've seen rapid change. Usually the same in both eyes. I went from 19 years old and perfect vision to needing glasses in a year and just for astigmatism. Try not to worry. your optometrist should be able to put your mind at ease or send you to an ophthamologist (sp?).

Try harder by doing less. Less worrying that is by heeding your doctors advise and stop woryying about it. The stress caused from worrying is far worse for you than the eye abnormalty if it is abnormal at all? Maybe you have supervision growing?

I swear my vision changes back and forth as the day goes by.   it's highly annoying.   Vertical astigmastism and light script to bring things into better focus.  One eye worse then the other.

Worst part is glasses are not working out well for me.  First pair 18 months ago sat in the case because they suck.  just picked up a new pair yesterday after going to a private practice vs a chain.  They are better overall due to them using Trivex vs Polycarb, Crizal,  and some other thing in the lense i can't remember.  Bad part is they still suck and will stay in the case.  $1000 down the tube in glasses over 18 months.  I'll return these and tell them to make me a single vision pair for distance like i wanted in the first place.  I manage fine with grocery store reading glasses and my computer glasses.  Progressive lenses just don't work for me.  So if i get a single vision pair for distance I will only be $600 down the tube.

WOW that's a lot of money wasted!! I was really glad she said I could wait to get new glasses. I spent so much last year, i hated the thought of them being garbage this soon.

Yup with the rest of the gang on this, your told it's nothing to worry about...So? Seems to me worrying is not the required response. Blunt I know, but when you say your were told it was nothing to worry about, then worrying is just something your doing to yourself, and that is as Pooh Bear would say "A Bad Thing" Yeah I got odd eyes as well, so I got odd glasses and yeah one eye went all of a sudden.

Chill Kit, worry is a killer.

But seriously, my left eye has been way worse than the right for over a decade now, and they used to be the same...all it really did was make my glasses more expensive. Oh, and it doesn't adjust from low light to bright quite as quickly as the right eye, but it has never been particularly worrisome to me.

Morning folks. Another cold damp day on the emerald isle. Facebook are allowing beheading videos, Cod players are not hardcore, I have finally cracked rebuilding my Genisis tank on my vaporiser, new strings on my guitar and I seem to be involved in the setting up of a forum for Sim racing Modders...Just another day in paradise.

Beheading videos? Surely that slipped through the cracks? Although, as gruesome as it sounds, maybe people really need to see just how friendly these people are and wake the hell up.

Ok, rant off...

This struck me as kinda FreeRadikal ish...

Knight, we had another Irish sign up in the Forza forum, how many is that now, 4? 5? Don't worry, I'll take good care of him. cool

Kit, relax, it's good for what ails you.
