I think we can give the Sony fans a pass on this for now. After all, Stephen Totilo (fuck off Kotaku) is personally involved now and will likey make the most hay from this field. It does remid me of the early days after the 360 released. Report here, nah! Report there, nah! Reports everywhere, WTF!

Sony makes good hardware, mostly always have.

Update: There are more reports coming in of ps4s breaking on neogaf & reddit...they are saying it now has a 20% failure rate & they are calling it the "WLOD"...white light of death. Btw a lot of these are from the taco bell promotion but still they are retail consoles so it makes u wonder.

Not really worried. This is a risk that we take with getting a new console on day 1.

I'm not that worried. I've had to send back many a computer parts on my day. 5% is the average for electronics failure, I question as to how they came up with 20%. How many Taco Bell winners were there total? Before we rush to judgement, wait for the console to be released first. If this time next week the rate is still 20%, then we have a legitimate problem.

From my understanding, there were around 4000 units given away by Taco Bell. 20% of that would be 800 failed units. There are roughly 8 defective units that have been made public, so either 99% of those with defects have said nothing online yet, or (more likely) 20% is a fanboy generated number with no grounding in truth.

There is no way anyone knows percentages at this point.

Without a legitimate known number of units to establish a pool, accuracy is out the window. And that's without getting into production date/runs and such.

Take a breath, relax, go to your happy place. As a canadian I know says "serenity".

Ha ha losers! PS4 crap Sony losez. Xbox winz. Microsoft 4eva!

I'm joking of course. It's terrible for the people who get affected and I'm sure there will reports all over the net tomorrow of failed systems. We shouldn't expect anything different next week when the One arrives.

Fact.  Who cares which system it is.  It sucks either way...

IT's more important what sony does to react to defective units than the fact that they're defective.  If they pull a Microsoft and try and deny the failure rate like they did with 360, then sony deserves to be shit on.  If they man up and get those units swapped no questions asked and no expense to the consumer, maybe a free game download as well, then they should be praised.

This.

How they deal with it, no matter the number of affected consoles will speak volumes.

I doubt that Sony will do anything worthy of praise. Then again maybe they will since they took a beating last gen.

I learned my lesson with Sony equipment with the PS2 and the chronic failures we had with them. There has been no forgiveness.

The "Disk Read Error" was horrible on the Playstation 2. Luckily it was a simple fix that pretty much any person could do in 5 minutes or less. Sony claims to be replacing the PS4 immediately after contacting them. I don't know anyone who has a broken PS4 and contacted them so I cannot verify the validity of that statement. Amazon however is replacing the broken PS4's fairly fast.

I hope that it doesn't turn in to a big problem like the rrod. I am amped up for the xbox release so I know how everyone has been waiting for the ps.  Hate to hear about anybody getting home and having issues like this.

I remember the "disc read error" debacle. I went to the store earlier and saw 20-30 lined up already for the PS4 midnight release.

A Sony representative has provided the following statement to IGN:

"A handful of people have reported issues with their PlayStation 4 systems. This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch.

There have been several problems reported, which leads us to believe there isn’t a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of systems. The number of affected systems represents less than .04% of shipped units to date, which is within our expectations for a new product introduction

There was about 4000 taco bell folks that won, plus all the media outlets.

Could be worse, at Ft. Bragg each time they do a jump they expect a certain percentage of troops to get injured.  Comforting info as your getting on the plane frown

What is the precentage?

I imagine everybody couting people around them as the engines roar for takeoff.

Sounds more like a Dreamliner Jet about to take off.

Hearsay has it the included HDMI cable is the culprit. Some contacts are getting bent. Current rumoured recommendation is to use an alternative HDMI cable. I have no evidence.

I have mine up and running. I cannot hear it and it looks pretty darn neat. Oh, and it's really small.

Yea I was surprised. It's almost the same size as the slim.
