Depends on playstyle and personal preference. You'll probably want the mini-shotgun.

don't laugh to hard. the AR is wicked in short range & CQC. it's even descent to mid range. pulse it like a BR.
There's only one in the clan that I know of that uses the AR on a regular basis, and he is the False Prophet.
i'm not a fan of it myself, but i've been forced to include it as my secondary in one of my loadouts. if you're in a short range battle you can't get 5 BR/DMR/LIGHT RIFLE shots off before you're dead. even with the magnum you'll probably trade kills.
I think I've earned fifty kills with the AR in my entire career of Halos 2 PC through Reach, but now the AR is a legit and viable option. I am thoroughly impressed with it. Paired with the Boltshot, I deliver many teabags on Adrift and Abandon.

I'm guessing that's bottom-middle of the map, unless that's just verbal diarrahea you're remembering.

yeah I know, I've gotten worked over by the AR several times, often from beyond what I would consider short range. I will never use it though.

The new AR is a beast up close. I've used it few times when I've run out of ammo in my DMR/BR. I then Rage Quit and proceed to take a shower.

The AR crushes face on most parts of Abandon. It's useful on Adrift too. I use firepower perk on both of those maps.
