Building a new racing rig as the current version is being retired!

As some of you may know, Im in the process of building a wheel stand to replace the Ghetto Rig 2000.  I'll go into more detail as the rig comes together.

In short, here is the parts list

  • 8 - 1.5 inch Sch 40 PVC Pipe
  • 8 - T joints
  • 4 - 90 deg joints
  • 5 - 45 deg joints
  • 3 - 22 deg joints
  • 2 - Y Joints
  • 6 - End caps
  • 5 - U-bolts
  • Nuts
  • Plywood (Not Shown)
  • Screws
  • PVC Adhesive

I've chosen to go with Black PVC so I don't have to paint it as the wife preferred it be black.  Costs a bit more but will be worth it.

I have a basic design drawn up however the measurements will be defined as I build.  Once finished, I will provide the details.  If all goes well, I should have this ready to go for testing tomorrow!

The basic shape is in place, although not final nor is is glued yet.  That said, this is pretty close to the actual version once its squared up.  Still need to get the wheel and pedal bases cut and installed but should give you a good idea on how it will work

Well its all but complete.  None of the joints are glued just yet.  The are just screws holding it on place in case I need to make and adjustments.  That and I still need to paint the wheel and pedal mount and clean it up.

As you can see, I made a few adjustments to the rig to stiffen it up a bit more and its now very solid.  Right now, Im using the wheel clamp but will hard mount it once the replacement wheel arrives next week..

For a rig for under $100.00, Im very happy with it

The best part is I can stand it up and move it next to the wall when not in use

Grim, when you get too old to play Forza anymore, you could slap some tennis balls on the bottom and use it for a walker too. 2FerOne YAY!!!

The rig is complete.  Added the finishing touch last night and I must say, this turned out better than I had hoped for.  This thing is rock solid.  It sits between the cushion and arm rests which locks it in place so there is no slippage and everthing just feels right

Please note the important aspect of the rig, the rotating cup holder!

Hey Grim, what adjustments did you make?? Orignal parts list complete? Gonna start something similar so I have it ready to go when I order my fanatec. Also, how sturdy is the pedal plate, specifically when you have the rig turned up.

^ The parts list is accurate (although the picture of the parts is not due to adding the side support pieces during the build

I started with the pedal structure first and them built the center arm towards me.  Once I had my feet in the position I wanted them, I had my son hold the rig stead while I positioned the wheel in a rough position where I wanted it..   That took the longest to get it right.  Once I had that in place the next major area for adjustments were the legs that go into the chair cushion.

After that I drilled several holes on the wheel plate so I could move it back or forward as I ran some laps and found a comfortable driving position.  Same with the pedal base.

As for the pedal plate being sturdy when its up, it actually sits on the inversion mounts on the pedals so that was a bonus.  We can talk more if you want.  just let me know

I bought 8 precut pipes that were each 2 feet long.  If you have any questions, shoot me a text or give me a call.

I can also take some detailed pics if there is anything you need to see closer.  Just let me know.  The biggest advise I can give though is use screws to hold everything in place before you glue.  The screws are strong enough while your building and making adjustments.  Once you are happy with the final varsion, I glued and screwed the pieces in place.  I then used black electrical tape to wrap the joints to cover the screw heads.  Hope it works out for you
