12/25/2006 - A Firefighters "working" X-Mas

The purpose of this was not to ruin anybody’s day but to remind “some” that people do work this day and please be courteous to working men & woman on x-mas. We are giving up being with our kids and family to keep others safe - Some people do forget this and can be the worst people. (I’ll explain at the end of this message).

Some people do work on x-mas day. Being a firefighter it’s a way of life. This was not my first working holiday and it will “not” be my last. A few things did happen today………..on my 12 hr (6a-6p) shift.

12/01/06 - Update to my last Entry

Just a quick update for all who responded to my last blog entry.................

After getting called into the chiefs office and walking in seeing the city attorney sitting there, I figured that this was not going to be a good one. Well as it turns out the city attorney and chief had only one comment for me and my partner - Next time I should have asked the guy for “his” address, then I could have responded to him "Next time while enroute there I'll go 5 mph under all posted speed limits".

11/29/06 - Driving to fast on a emergency call.

Does anybody have a problem with Fireman or Cops driving a little "faster" than normal while enroute to a "child choking call"??????.

If you have read my last blog you’ll know that things are crazy at work right now. New fire chief started on Monday and so far all is well with that. He has not taken the grand tour to all the stations yet, it maybe will be on Thursday or Friday. Well I did get to meet him on Tuesday and again all is well so far……

Funny incident today 10/18/06

New "Fire Chief" starts on 10/16

Back in Feb 2006, our "Fire Chief" of 30 years retired and since then our city has been interviewing and testing for a new replacement. It was assumed that it was just a formality (testing and interview) and that our current "Asst. Chief" would just get promoted. Well after approx. 15 interviews and 6 months of testing, my city has hired someone from the outside - a current Capt. for another city close to ours. He has been a fulltime firefighter and promoted through the ranks to Capt. for the past 30 years.

Car fire on 10/06/06

Responded to a huge cargo van fire (contractors painting van) yesterday. I normally would not write about something like this but this one was one of the biggest I've ever seen in my career - and of course I was on the line with the "rookie" backing me up.

Just a quick moment to say "Thanks" to all 343 Fireman (union brothers) who lost their lives trying to save others 5 yrs ago. "Thanks" to all the other public safety workers who were their also. "Thanks" to all the citizens who assisted with rescue efforts all over the U.S. that day. Its because of all of you that we can sit here and enjoy life. I hope that if I'm ever faced with a situation like that, that I can be as brave as all of you were.
