Still ashamed

The news here in the deep south is all about the poisoning of the oak trees on Toomer's Corner in Auburn.  They announced today the arrest of a suspect and published his picture that will be the face of SEC football in general and Alabama football specifically to the rest of the nation for some time to come.  There is even some talk in the heat of the moment about moving Auburn to the East division and Tenessee to the west so this rivalry can only happen once every 4 years.

I am very ashamed

If you're from the South, you know college football is almost a religion.  Sometimes more so, I bet a church couldn't get 102,000 for a Sunday morning service.  You must declare a favorite team early in childhood and to change is almost sacrilege.  So I grew up and Auburn Tiger fan.  Then, back in the mid 1990's, Terry Bowden was fired after going 11 and 0 his first year and the only reason he didn't win a national championship that year was because Auburn was on probation and banned from post season play.  I really didn't like the way he was treated by the administration but stuck around.

Faith

An old dear friend called me today and had a strange request.  Seems he has had 2 near death experiences in 4 weeks and truly believes God saved him both times.  He really didn't want to worry his family but felt like he ought to share somehow and wants me to post something on facebook about because, in his words, I'm a good ponderer.

Summertime eating

Went over to my folks Sunday to wish Dad a happy father's day, and a selfish reason.  Blueberries are here.  He's had about 4 blueberry bushes for almost 25 years now and always makes a lot of berrys.  Came home yesterday and found the first watermelon on my porch, a 50 punder.  While it's been a dry summer, we're getting just enough rain to make the very best kind of watermelons, wet enough so they will grow, dry enough to make them very sweet.  Also picked a bushel of purple hull peas.  So supper last night was peas and cornbread, and for dessert watermelon and blueberry muffins.  And thi

WTF???

Picture this.  I'm sleeping deeply about 4:30 this morning.  Suddenly, lights come on all over the house.  I wake up to my wife standing over me, trembling, whispering urgently (the kids are still asleep), "There's a fucking snake in the den!!"  Now I don't wake up quickly and it takes my eyes a few minutes to focus clearly, but  I get up and go look, and sure enough there is a 1' snake on the floor.  We look at the snake, look at each other, the bewilderment evident in our eyes, and wonder how the hell we're going to get that thing out of our house.  My darling wife, who's been awake 5 min
